"Until the killing of black men, black mothers’ sons, becomes as important to the rest of the country as the killing of a white mother’s sons, we who believe in freedom cannot rest until this happens." #ellabaker #BlackHistoryMonth #blackresistance

The civil rights movement wasn’t powered by lone heroes but by builders like Ella Baker—women whose labor was erased to preserve a myth. Liberation isn’t charisma. It’s infrastructure.

Her belief in everyday people shaped SNCC, strengthened the Civil Rights Movement, and redefined what leadership could be.

“Oppressed people, if they are to become free, must themselves be the makers of their own freedom. We must build strong communities so that when the police come, they do not find us alone and vulnerable, but standing together.”

Ella Baker was an American community organizer and political activist who is widely recognized as one of the key leaders of the American civil rights movement. Baker grew up in North Carolina, but moved to NY after college, where she found people suffering from poverty and hardship caused by the Great Depression. Here she was introduced to the radical political activism that became her life’s work. In the 1930s, Baker helped organize the Young Negroes Cooperative League, which would pool community resources and provide less-expensive goods and services to members. Baker went on to join the NAACP until the mid 1940s, when she started caring for her niece. She still managed to work with the New York branch to integrate local schools and improve the quality of education for Black children (people tend to forget schools were still segregated less than 80 years ago). Inspired by the Montgomery bus boycott in 1955, Baker cofounded the organization "In Friendship" to raise money for the Civil Rights movement in the South. In 1957, she helped form the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) to coordinate reform efforts throughout the South. Baker left the SCLC in 1960 to help student leaders of college activist groups organize the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC). With her guidance and encouragement, SNCC became one of the foremost advocates for human rights in the country. Baker acquired the nickname “Fundi,” a Swahili word meaning "one who teaches a craft to the next generation." Baker continued to be a respected and influential leader in the fight for human and civil rights until her death on her 83rd birthday.
