“Elsa Conrad” Born May 9,1887. She is one of the much rarer cases where documentation shows she was arrested and sent to a concentration camp because of being a lesbian (though she was also Jewish, her lesbian identity is mentioned over and over by the Gestapo.) Elsa was briefly married to a man, but it is widely believed it was a sham marriage as they were both gay. Elsa then opened several businesses that catered to lesbians. The first was a bar called Verona-Diele. With her partner Amalie “Mali” Rothaug, Elsa then ran the club in Berlin called Mali und Igel (both their nicknames). There was a club inside the bar that was known as a gathering place for intellectuals and lesbians, and even hosted Marlene Dietrich at one point. The Nazis seized the couples’ bar in 1933, and Elsa was arrested in 1935. The Gestapo noted in their report that Elsa “is lesbian disposed and maintains relationships with lesbians.” In reading the report, I found Elsa to be an absolute spitfire and she had no problem openly mocking Hitler, Hermann Göring and Josef Goebbels, even when others around her warned it was illegal to speak in such a way. When Elsa heard the Nazi national anthem of “Horst-Wessel-Lied” she said she “started to vomit.” Just 10 days after being released from her first sentence, she was re-arrested and sent to Moringen concentration camp. Her ex-girlfriend Berta Stenzel paid for a ticket on a ship to Africa to help Elsa escape. The camp commander said he would allow this, but then did nothing and kept her imprisoned for another year. She finally was released and escaped to Africa, where she ran a milk bar. She died February 19, 1963. #pinktriangleportraits #elsaconrad #lgbtart #art #holocaust #holocaustremembrance #pinktriangle #blacktriangle #rosawinkel #gayart #queerart #paragraph175 #pride #wwii
