Was lucky enough to catch the Portland Wryneck this afternoon, about 4pm. Only a 30 second viewing, but a viewing still and a first for me!

Last year this wryneck was living alone in our yard. This summer it seems to have found a partner. 🥰

Wryneck. August 2013.
Barely noticeable from a distance, this Wryneck was searching for ants on a concrete bike path.

A very rare Eurasian Wryneck in the middle of a forest taking a break on a sawn-off tree stump. Its feathers are puffed up a bit because they are so wet, it has been raining for days. Wrynecks belong to the Woodpecker family but look and behave quite different from the other Woodpeckers. It is an expert in camouflage.

In the Netherlands, we have 6 kinds of #Woodpeckers.
Some are quite common and some are difficult to spot, but this one ... If you ever spot it... you're a lucky Motherf... I mean Photographer, it's extremely rare and always very well camouflaged. #EurasianWryneck #JynxTorquilla #BirdsinLatin #Bird
