#FantasyIndies 1/Apr/26: Introduce Self and WIP.

I'm Daniel, an Aussie author writing fantasy whodunnit stories. In my current WIP, 'What One Does For Hate', Yaetherim is hired by the innkeepers guild to investigate a series of mass poisonings. He ends up working with his brother to solve the case.

"Nathrach, why don't you do a reading for our bookseller?"

"I didn't bring my dice," said Nathrach.

"Dice?" said Vos. "In Threnland, fortunes are told through cards, or reading---" He faltered, unsure of the word for palms--- "um, hands."

"Dice made of gloan from deep within the towers," Nathrach intoned. Vos's eyes met his, and they were the color of the towers outside. "And twelve sides, not six like your mainland dice." Then Nathrach pouted. "But they're back in my wagon."

"Try anyway," said Madame Causpirra.

"Reading hands, hm?" Nathrach pulled Vos's hand up off the table and clasped it tight. He pried the fingers gently open. "Are you a book too?" Vos's head swam. The man's grip was warm and strong.

"I see a long journey," said Nathrach.

"That's nothing," Illinn laughed. "He's riding out the year with the circus."

Nathrach raised a hand. "And a man. A pale-haired man, his limbs twined with yours."

Next to Vos, an older man---Triatt, maybe?---leaned over. "Beware. He's just trying to get you into his bed." He shrugged. "Worked on me."

I'm Rachel. My current wip is the first book in a paranormal new adult series, This Time will be Different.

With similar vibes to Life is Strange and Pushing Daisies, it's set in a world where anyone who has seen death or nearly died can see ghosts... and nobody talks about it. #fantasyindies

#12: Nat and Vola think of Marak as a problem they can't entirely understand or face alone. He's not like Lily. He's calculating and cold and wants to eat and defile their souls.

To Marak, they are food. A long long needed meal.

Day 5: Vola I would say is afraid of being thrown back into that world she came from again. Losing her sobriety and honestly that Marak may have intentions for her and Nat similar to what Lily did to her. (2/?)

I'm really proud of the work we have put into Licorice and Mint over the past few years. How we've fleshed out the relationships and friendships for Nat and Vola so when we approach Book 3 we will see a Weasel Crew story with them.

Vola is used to scary things and places being a monster hunter, and Nat has seen some the worst of humanoid anatomy and diseases as medical student. There are things they are terrified of. And there's the rent situation...

Two skybridges later, he was putting an egg bake in the oven, setting oatmeal in the auto-pot, and preparing coffee in the antique silver service. It wasn’t exactly a five-star meal, but he’d been studying recipes and cooking guides and was determined to get better before Dr. Eiflman tired of his efforts. Out of habit, he opened the dumbwaiter and was unsurprised to see that the car was, once again, not where he had left it the previous night.
He whistled idly to himself as he made his way the long way around the second ring, through office, library, nautical lobby, and study, quieting his whistle as he approached the dressing room. It wasn’t that his employer would mind whistling, but he preferred to keep his whistles to himself.
“Meow, mrrow! Meow, mrrow!”
A large fluffy ball of gray fur hopped through the portal from the master bedroom into the dressing room as he entered, and trundled eagerly towards him, making joyful figure-eights around his ankles.
“Mr. Chevaliet?”
“Good morning, sir,” Bayle called back.
“You’ve stolen my cat, once again, my good man.”
“Apologies, sir. Did you have a good night?”
“Ah, as good as usual, I suppose,” the man grunted, sliding out of bed and heading for the bathroom. He set about transferring things from cart to marble-topped table while high-stepping with great care over and around the large, excited cat

Just a jaunty scene of Bayle, the butler, doing a morning routine.

The day spent at Yarrow’s side exhausted all the good morning fish had done. These men labored like their lives were owed to aching. So many, near two thousand Yarrow claimed, and yet when the sun set and the moons rose, the signs of their passage through the lush curve of Greensward would show hardly more than a crease in the grasses, and a gorge in need of a season to compost their collected excretions.

8/16 How do you deal with the bodily stuff in narrative? In fantasy, journeys abound. Irl in a car on I10, I'm always in a dead panic for where we're gonna stop next. I feel compelled to at least meantion it once or twice. That just me?

8/15 Free Friday--can I go back to harping on the idea of overediting? What I meant when I said we've been sold the notion of brevity as the gold standard is that it always benefitted publishers. 1/?

My favourite fairytale? Without a doubt, it's FROZEN! 😆

I am serious. I love its themes of duty, trauma and mental health, as well as an insightful perspective on female power.

Every year, I proudly place Elsa at the top of my Christmas tree as a sign of my appreciation!

FantasyIndiesAugust prompt/Text over faded background: Snippet
“I don’t believe in wolfs,” the little girl said. She always talked too loud when she was wrong.
“Wolves, listen, wolves, and don’t be so cocksure. You sound like your brother,” Taja said as she rubbed her knuckles with henbane and calendula. The stench burned her nose, but the night was cold, and her old bones ached. The child’s constant need to be entertained did nothing to improve the aching, and that’s why a story had seemed just the trick to pass the day's last rows before sleep overtook Valo’s evening spurt of wildness, but the little one had a gift for trying Taja’s goodwill as it waned.
Valo sniffed, picked a thicket bur from the tail of her matted braid. “Never seen no wolfs–wolves. And Hyva’d say the same thing.”
Taja took the burr and chucked it over the grate. Smoke drifted up through worn thatch, melting the first dust of snow, and the fire sizzled and spat with every fresh drip.
“If I wanted to hear from Hyva, I’d have him come and sit with us. Have I called him in? No. I sent him to the barn to light the smudges and oil Busu’s harness, tire himself out. So don’t tell me how he sounds, and don’t sound like he would. You get busy being yourself.”
