The laughter swelled, Caster had veered away from what his topic should have been. Eleanor’s cheeks flushed; she had come here to rally people, not trade barbs with a man from up North, still, she raised her pamphlet as if it were a sword. “The capitalist is the vampire that feeds on your toil,” she snapped. “Day by day he dr inks your blood, and when you are broken, he casts you aside!” “Aye, I’ve known a few vampires in me time,” Caster grimaced. He knew he was losing the crowd to someone far better articulated than he was, so mockery and sarcasm became his weapon of choice. “But they were landlords, not bosses. Bloodsuckers, draining me pennies for a pint!” The crowd hooted, Caster basked in the laughter, while Eleanor tried to shout him down. “Why don’t yer two just get married an’ shout at each other at home?” someone yelled. The square erupted in cackles and whistles. Eleanor stamped her foot, her stare pure, unadulterated fury. Even Caster could sense it. What was meant to be a call to arms had descended into pantomime. “Right then,” barked Constable Jez Poots, elbowing through the crowd. “Disturbin’ the peace again, Mister Caster?” He held out his hands to the police officer, he knew what was coming.

From draft one of Book 3, chapter 1, Ætheren POV: “Boy,” said a voice from behind him, pulling him out of his thoughts. He turned to see Finn Avaron, ringmaster, approaching. Beautiful. Finn was beautiful. And Ætheren could do little more than gape at the man gliding towards him—long, thin limbs in a well-cut suit, and those star-slate eyes. Ætheren’s breath hitched as the ringmaster approached. He tossed Ætheren a broad, flat rake and said with an accent Ætheren did not recognize, “the animal’s stalls need mucking.” His chest fell as he caught the rake and lowered his eyes, cheeks heating. He thought he caught a smirk on Finn’s beautiful face, but he brisked by him so quickly it was difficult to tell.
