It's sunset, and the two fairy tale kids find that the edge of the forest leads down to a shore. The inky footprints head down the sand and into the sea. The taller kid uses the inkbrush to draw in the book, and with a magical glow of blue dust, a BOAT springs off the page and into reality, bright white against the gray and sepia tones of the scene. A fancy scroll caption reads: "The trail leads into the vast and dangerous SEA."

Maggie Stiefvaters THE SCORPIO RACES made me fall in love with Kelpies. It’s a book about the rough sea, creatures & about an unusual friendship and how wild creatures cannot be tamed.

Together they sailed across all the oceans and seas of the world. They had many adventures, just as they had dreamed. As the years went by the boy worked his way up to Sailing Master, in charge of navigation and directing the course of the ship. It was a prestigious but difficult job and he started to think of leaving his life at sea behind. “We have been travelling many years my dearest swan.” Said the boy “I would like to retire and perhaps put down some roots in a sleepy village by the mountains.” But the swan was not ready to end her adventures. “There will be plenty of time for that later. ” Said the swan. “We should sail the world for one more year, while you are still young.” The Boy could never say no to the swan, and so they soon set off on their final journey.
