Blue-faced Laughingthrush taking a dip
The muddy forest patch in Ladam road, West Bengal
Drove a total of 1400Km to represent one of the under represented districts of the state for #GBBC2025. Dull weather, Rain and extreme cold accompanied the entire time in that area.
A meagre 96 species from the mountains from about 15 hours of birding but huge considering the conditions.
On a snowy trail, a group of people dressed in warm winter clothes are looking and pointing at a Jack Pine trunk, discussing woodpecker feeding behaviour, surrounded by conifer trees with their branches heavy with snow.
A Great Backyard Bird Count participant with a blue winter jacket is holding a pair of binoculars in his left hand and pointing at a Ruffed Grouse with his right hand. The grouse is perched high up in a spruce tree, almost impossible to detect. It is winter; the ground and tree branches are covered in snow.
A Ruffed Grouse, all puffed up, is perched in the middle of thick snowy conifer branches. The grouse is very well camouflaged with its brown patterned plumage.
Nature enthusiasts braved the -32°C wind chill temperatures on Family Day at Hersey Lake Conservation Area in Timmins for MRCA's annual Winter Hiking Day! Our Great Backyard Bird Count hike was a lot of fun!! ❄️🐦 #GreatBackyardBirdCount #GBBC2025 #TimminsOntario #TimminsBirds #GBBC
Only two bird species were spotted in 20 minutes. 5 Chestnut-backed Chickadees and one Sharp-shinned Hawk. The hawk did not score a meal and was already in the yard, well hidden, when I started my bird count.
Day four of the great backyard bird count:
It was unusually quiet in our backyard when I started my observation time. I finally spotted the reason why. 🪶

The last day of the #GBBC:
1 Red-shouldered Hawk
1 Blue Jay
A bunch of Common Grackles
1 American Robin
At least four White-throated Sparrows
#GBBC2025
The birds I could ID within about 1 hr of walking in my neighbourhood. Even in the middle of the city, it feels nice to tune into nature that we may take for granted #gbbc2025 #birding #greatbackyardbirdcount
I almost forgot: can anyone help with an ID? I saw this bird that reads like a woodpecker but couldn’t get a good enough shot for a photo ID. #GBBC #GBBC2025
I also saw two Mourning Doves and two Turkey Vultures. And two Mallard Ducks on the way home. #GBBC #GBBC2025
Award for the funniest video of the day goes to two of the Canadian Geese navigating the still partly frozen lake. The one on the left is confident, walking tall, while the one on the right is crouched low and slipping with each step. At one point it almost falls on its butt. #GBBC #GBBC2025
Here’s a short video clip of a bluebird on a branch and another flying by behind it. The Merlin app said they are uncommon for this area but they seemed right at home. #GBBC #GBBC2025
A small bird with a blue head and wings is perched among dense, bare tree branches.
A small bird with a blue head and wings is perched among dense, bare tree branches.
I saw Eastern Bluebirds in real life for the first time and they were so beautiful in flight, those bright flashes of blue. As you can see, the sun came out for a bit, but the wind was still intense. #GBBC #GBBC2025
A male hooded merganser in the creek with the vegetated bank in the background. A small duck with a beautiful moveable crest on the back of the head. It's white with a black border. This bird also has a very thin serrated bill. The body is black on the back with brown on the sides and a black and white breast.
A male and three female hooded mergansers.
Some hooded mergansers swimming in the creek! #birds #GBBC2025 🪶
I decided to go to the park because I know there are geese and Red-winged Blackbirds there. I saw almost 100 Canadian geese but no blackbirds. BUT, it was still a fruitful trip. #GBBC #GBBC2025
A mourning dove and a belted kingfisher on a power line facing the same direction. The mourning dove has a dainty head, pink/gray body and small bill in lovely contrast to the kingfisher's giant head in proportion to its stocky body. The kingfisher is a stocky bird with a dark blue crested head and mantle, white "belt" around its neck and white and chestnut chest. A large pointy black bill.

My favorite photo of the weekend so far! A Belted Kingfisher and a Mourning Dove perched on the same power line. #birds #GBBC2025 🪶

A California scrub-jay on some power lines with a rodent in its bill. Clear blue sky in the background. The bird has a gray breast, whiter throat, blue head with black around its eye. A long tail that's squared off at the end.
A second photo of the same California scrub-jay on some power lines with a rodent in its bill. Clear blue sky and the top of a tree in the background. The bird has a white/gray breast, whiter throat, blue head with black around its eye. A long tail that's squared off at the end.
So far I've had a productive Great Backyard Bird Count weekend! Here's a California Scrub-Jay on some power lines with a little snack. #birds #GBBC2025 🪶

Alt text: a videographer crosses a living room to try to get a photo of a hawk. It flies away as soon as it seems the person.
Much milder temp-wise: we’re supposed to hit 60F. But it’s also wet and rainy, and we’re under a high wind advisory. The hoard of grackles are back so I counted some more since it was impossible to count them all yesterday, and there are some crows but I think they’re the same crows. #GBBC #GBBC2025
Do Red-winged Blackbirds hang out with Common Grackles? I’ve never seen RwBs around my house but I’ve seen them at a park about 30 minutes away. I ask because the grackles are here and the app keeps hearing RwBs too. #GBBC #GBBC2025
Two day status update on the Great Backyard Bird Count. 6,846 species!
Just got this in an email: "Birds Bring the World Together and Make it Brighter"
Great numbers! #GBBC #GBBC2025
Day 2 checklist: 13 species, 33 individual birds.
Day 2. I counted at lunch time, and there were more individual birds than yesterday at breakfast. Most are the same but two new ones today: Carolina Wren and Pine Warbler.
I also saw two Brown-headed Nuthatches; they came to the feeder together and I hope they are a mated pair.

Fuzzy photo of a bunch of birds at a distance feeder, the foreground includes snowy footprints.
Another bad photo of birds, in the foreground a birding list, a very old bird book and a decent pair of binoculars
A very fuzzy photo of lots of birds.
Today's fuzzy pics. I told my colleagues I did not have the patience to count my blackbirds... they said "send some bad pics, we will count". It took them 5 minutes.
Birding does not have to be perfect - just enjoyed

1 Mockingbird
At least 50 Grackles (I wish I could input the number on Merlin instead of doing it individually)

A Carolina Wren found in my yard on Day 2 of the global Great Backyard Bird Count.
6774 species; 85.5K complete checklists to date.
A man is wearing a yellow winter jacket and snowshoeing up a small hill in thick snow. The bright afternoon sun is shinning through the conifer branches in the surrounding forest, casting light and shadows on the snow. Beside the man's snowshoe trail, we can see fresh tracks left by a Canada Lynx a moment earlier.
In a conifer tree-top full of cones, two birds are busy feeding on the cones; one greyish-brown female, and a red male with black wings with white bars. These birds are called White-winged Crossbills and they feed on conifer cones with their unique crossed mandibles.
First day of the #GreatBackyardBirdCount did not disappoint! We snowshoed a new trail near South Porcupine and saw some White-winged Crossbills and a few other species. #Birds #SouthPorcupineBirds #GBBC2025
