The article about the Wilder “Little House” books is Anita Fellman’s, “Don’t expect to depend on anyone else” from Children’s Lit (1996). Lots published since then but I wanted something that focused on romanticized, sanitized depictions of frontier life. #GenEd students found it very approachable.

Pass it on. At #JMU we still require students to take a #GenEd course focused on origins and development of US political systems, and I hope it isn’t axed in favor of “career readiness” over civic engagement. Madison got some things right.

Pros: ND consistently has twice as many jobs as those looking for work. This will hopefully increase the amount of candidates ten years down the road
Cons: Removing #gened credits is how you get motion activated sinks that don't recognize dark skin tones.

#GenEd director/hist here. We discuss this a lot at #GenEd conferences. It will be hard to block ‘FL approach’ due to shared gov, wh requires sr admin & BoV approval of programs. But politics aside, the ongoing push at most unis to ⬆️ STEM &career readiness means ⬇️ other requirements. 🙁
I expect you will get asked about AI when you come here! Some folks want a new #GenEd requirement to ensure every student knows what to do with “all this new tech,” but of course there’s no faculty agreement re: what to do. 🤷🏻♀️

Fabulous meeting today to sort through 110+ preliminary ideas for renewing JMU’s #GenEd program. Very few wacky ones, considerable support for broad, liberal arts & sciences, but desire to see certain competencies elevated. And we had fun! A good start for the year ahead!
I actually see 3 'buckets' for #AI education: AI literacy #GenEd, AI across the curriculum, and AI majors (as in this list). Disturbing though that no #SUNY @sunyofficial.bsky.social campuses on on this list.

Yesterday a rising @JMU senior emailed me seeking advice on what #science #gened to take. She told me she’s “very bad at science” & is worried she won’t walk. She’s not “bad” at science! There is no #gene for science that she didn’t get! We just do a really bad job of teaching it
