The image shows George McGovern during his service in the Army Air Corps as a B-24 bomber pilot in World War II. McGovern earned the Distinguished Flying Cross for his heroism in safely landing a damaged B-24 bomber during a mission. His military service was a significant part of his life before he entered politics. He later went on to become a U.S. Senator from South Dakota and was the Democratic presidential nominee in 1972.

McGovern is most widely remembered as the Democratic Party's nominee in the 1972 presidential election, where he ran against incumbent President Richard Nixon but lost in a historic landslide. McGovern was a decorated World War II bomber pilot who later became a vocal opponent of the Vietnam War. He was also a strong advocate for civil rights and programs aimed at helping the poor, leaving a lasting imprint on U.S. politics and inspiring many Democrats. McGovern also played a key role in establishing the Food for Peace program, a significant humanitarian initiative.
