This one was made by A. and W. Smith, which was founded in Paisley on 1836, and later operated out of the Eglinton Engine Works in Tradeston, meaning it may well have been made relatively locally.

Installed in 1889, it was originally at the entrance to the Harbour Workshop. It even still has the stone tramways on either side of it to make it easier for horse-drawn vehicles to travel over the surrounding setts.

I love the fact this weigh station has been left in place in the new park at the Govan Graving Docks in Glasgow.

It's recently been cleaned up and is part of the new park created on the site, allowing visitors to explore it.

This would originally have contained the boiler, accumulator and pump used to pump water out of what was the largest and deepest dry dock in the UK at the time it was constructed in the early 1870s.

Love the new public space which has been created at the historic Govan Graving Docks in Glasgow. For me, it has just the right mix of old and new to maintain its links with the past while still giving it a modern feel.

🔔 Huge news for McNair & Elder's 1938 streamline / international style #ArtDeco cinema ~ the dilapidated B-listed #Govan Lyceum (converted to bingo hall 1981 & closed completely 2006) will take centre stage in Govan town centre renewal ✨🎉 #ArtDecoCentenary #Glasgow www.urbanrealm.com/news/2026/03...
It's a very stylish building, but I've been able to find out relatively little about it's history prior to it being converted into a hospital.

Old Tour #Scotland #Ancestry Travel Visit #Genealogy #Scottish Family #History Blog #photography of the Elder Free Library in #Govan, #Glasgow. Gifted by Mrs Elder and designed by J J Burnet. It was opened on 5 September 1903 by Andrew Carnegie tour-scotland-photographs.blogspot.com/2014/10/old-...
Whether or not Andrew Carnegie donated less or more to the library's construction than Isabella Elder, it still counts among the #GlasgowCarnegies ... but is also an outlier for 1. being built in #Govan before its annexation to #Glasgow & 2. the joint funding #hybridCarnegie bsky.app/profile/carn...
Glasgow Life, BBC, Scotsman. etc say Isabella Elder donated £10k; other sources say £27k (possible source: McAlpine 1997 & 2006) but elsewhere £27k cited as total cost... so depends on how much Carnegie donated exactly, if £27 was total & if there were other donors

The dock was closed in the 1970s, but it was then re-used as part of the Glasgow Garden Festival site in 1988, which stimulated the regeneration of much of it. However, this section remains unutilised.
