The Horned Grebe is a fairly small grebe. This breeding adult has black head with golden tufts on the sides of its head, a black back, and cinnamon neck, breast, and sides. During non-breeding season this water bird usually white and gray-black.

I enjoy biking on the San Francisco Bay Trail, and photographing birds. I turned a photo of courting Clark’s Grebes into a linoleum block print on fabric, then sewed that into a potholder. Green birding miles: 6,716.

The Red-tailed Hawk is the most widespread hawk in North America. It's bulky and broadwinged for effortless soaring. The adult's body is mainly dark brown with a white chest and brown belly band. Adults also have a rusty-red tail. This juvenile has thin horizontal stripes on the underside of its brown tail.
The Horned Grebe is a small diving bird. The body and head are mainly dark brown. The eyes are red. In breeding season it sports a splay of gold-colored feathers over its cheeks.
