Legend says Tara was born from a tear of Avalokiteshvara. He looked down at the world & saw the immense suffering, he wept. One of the tears fell to earth & formed a lake, & from that lake, a lotus grew. When the lotus opened, the Green Tara emerged.

These naturalistic sculptures, often made in the Edo period, were popular among the literati (bunjin) for their rustic, organic aesthetic, which reflected the concept of wabi-sabi.
