Big guy for Prehistory run (comic I'm working on)! He's a Ground Sloth named Tuff (the rock not the meme </3). He's the announcer for the race the main characters are in.

Digital cel-shaded artwork of a giant ground sloth chowing down on avocados, straight from the avocado tree. This sloth is twelve feet tall with gorgeous locks of algae-yellow hair all over its body. Its face bears the typical sloth ‘mask’ of dark spots around the eyes and a white muzzle with a wet snuffly nose at the end. The sloth’s mouth is open, bearing two absurdly long upper fangs and equally sharp-looking lower fangs, while an entire avocado gets crushed between its molars. The tree is small compared to the sloth, and planted into an isometric square chunk of prehistoric South American earth. The ground sloth grasps the tree in both of its arms and bends its trunk over one hairy shoulder in order to nab one tricky avocado in its mouth. More plump avocados await the beast’s appetite as they dangle in the tree’s branches. Knowing how fast a sloth goes it’s probably set for a few hours, if not days, of feasting. Day 15: Giant Ground Sloth

'Wild avocados depended on ground sloths eating them to survive' may be an oversimplified science meme...but it's cute, so I will draw it

Various preserved examples of #Mylodon skin and fur. Mylodon was a giant #groundsloth that went #extinct approx. 10,000 years ago. Examination of the furs revealed that Mylodon was the only type of sloth to have osteoderms imbedded in their skin.

Unfortunately it was in Florida but they unearthed a giant ground sloth claw while digging a water line. Archeology is cool! Article in time-line previous to this.

Ground sloth skeleton on a pedestal with sign. It reads Harlan's ground sloth
Paramylodon harlani
At around 1,500 pounds and over nine feet in length, the Harlan's ground sloth was considered a medium-sized ground sloth. The largest species could be nearly 20 feet in length! Sloths' powerful arms and claws may have been used to dig roots and tubers (they were herbivores) and for self-protection. The living relatives of these ancient giants include armadillos and small tree sloths.

A look down into Pit 91, “an active fossil dig where scientists are uncovering everything from small plant seeds to giant ground sloths. From the Viewing Station, you can see deep into Pit 91 where thousands of bones of extinct animals like the western horse, saber-tooth cat, and dire wolf are jumbled together in pools of sticky asphalt.” It is covered in a wooded canopy and its walls are supported by scaffolding

🦣 Giant Ground Sloths roamed N. & S. America 🌎 from the Miocene to Ice Age (~20,000 yrs ago).

🥥🌿 They were herbivores, munching leaves & fruit.

Some, like #Megatherium, stood 20' tall! 🦖

Few predators, but early humans 🏹 may have hunted them to extinction. ❄️

Looking back at Dececchi et al. (2020), I just realized that the findings in our recent paper on #groundsloth thermal energetics may have more applications for #Tyrannosaurids than I initially realized. Both were getting "metabolic mileage" by using energy saving adaptations.

While we had a decent sample size for our recent paper on #groundsloth physiology and integument, there were a few that unfortunately didn't make the final cut. One such specimen was this #Eremotherium tooth from the Talara tar pits in Peru. #FossilFriday

I just finished working on #Pleistocene #groundsloth #coprolites from a New Mexico cave. So, for #FossilFriday here is a plate of #CalciumOxalate (#CaOx) #phytoliths from said poop. I rarely get to work on CaOx phytoliths and make use of my polarizers so this was a treat! #2is#1
