Gwen John - “Autorretrato” 1902 Tate Gallery, Londres @tate A la galesa Gwen John no se le ponía nada por delante. Después de estudiar pintura en la Slade School de Londres, con 27 años hizo las maletas y se marchó a vivir a París. Los primeros años consiguió sobrevivir vendiendo obras y posando como modelo para otros artistas, entre los que se encontraba Rodin, que la retrató varias veces y con El que tuvo una aventura bastante intensa, a pesar de que el señor le sacaba cuarenta años El resto de su vida vivió bastante a su aire, sin ataduras, acompañado de sus fieles gatos, que aparecen en varias de sus obras. miradas que intimidan, imposibles de evitar. La persona retratada nos observa desde el otro lado del lienzo, a través del tiempo y el espacio, intentando establecer una conversación muda con nosotros. La expresión de la artista es seria, pero no antipática. Lleva puesto un vestido rojo, sencillo, pero muy llamativo, adornado en el cuello con un camafeo en el que está tallado un busto femenino de perfil, que contrasta de forma genial con su postura. La luz intensa modela sus facciones, creando sombras muy marcadas, pero que tampoco resultan duras, y dando brillo al cabello. Según parece, después de visitar una exposición de acuarelas de Cézanne, Gwen John comentó: “Son muy buenas, pero prefiero las mías”. Así, con un par de ovarios, porque ella lo valía.
