Central to the picture are 3 close tree trunks with their roots blanketed with moss. The thinner left tree is covered with viral burls about every 12 inches. The central thicker tree has the bark on the left side split and missing, with decay setting in the bottom left side. The right tree seems somehow wider at the top than the bottom, possibly due to leaning towards the viewer. Rhododendron trees can be seen in the background. The viewer looks off and edge at Hawksbill across to the shark fin shaped peak of Table Rock and to the right the Linville River gorge. The gorge has a layer of exposed rock before obtaining a steep angle towards the river. Distant mountains are light blue in the far distance and there is light filtering through thick cloud cover. Evergreen trees in the foreground are mixed with deciduous trees in reds and yellows at lower elevations.
