Approximately 70,000 people in the city died instantly. Another 50,000 died from radiation poisoning, injuries, and food scarcity over the next few days. Later analysis of the bomb indicated that only 1.7 percent of its radioactive material went through the fission stage – meaning that more than 98 percent of the bomb’s explosive energy was not released. Throughout the remainder of 1945, American reporter John Hersey talked with people living in and around the city on the day the bomb dropped. These conversations with survivors became Hersey’s book, titled Hiroshima. In 1999, the journalism department of New York University pulled together a 36-member panel to determine the finest piece of journalism written in the 20th Century. The panel agreed that it was Hersey’s Hiroshima.
