Sure, but I don't begrudge anyone for using whatever pretext to link to an episode of #99%Invisible, esp. 1 I haven't heard. Concept that most freq. reminds me of that show = #DesirePath, & I became familiar w/ this #HostileDesign episode just in time to have it inform wanderings on our summer trip:

💺 Seating designed for groups to sit together, or a single person to lie down on if awaiting delays (quite opposite to the #HostileDesign approaches taken more recently regarding public seating) with fabrics that can easily repaired or replaced (a great example of 🌱 #Sustainable #Design in action).

It’s kinda like #hostiledesign with less subterfuge.

Found a variation on the Roach Motel + Forced Continuity #DarkPattern - Being unable to remove a credit card from your profile. This is especially #HostileDesign when you no longer want to do business with them, and you're forced to leave finance data at risk with them.

Current hatred: #HostileDesign usage by apps to bury notifications settings to discourage you from turning off nagging notifications, and not giving you granular options to define what you are or aren't okay with.

More importantly, we'll lead from the front through education, advocacy, privacy, and stand in defense of those harmed through #HostileDesign.

What does that mean? It means we commit to things like #AccessibleDesign, we give proper credit to the creators of content we reuse, we fight against #HostileDesign and #DarkPatterns, and we advocate for those who don't have a voice in the process.

#HostileDesign can be accessible. It can be inclusive. And yet, it's still awful. It's designed to trick. It goes beyond #usability into psychology. It's meant to manipulate and deceive. It is the dark side of the force. Exercise #KindDesign.

#KindDesign is #InclusiveDesign. It's #UniversalDesign, #AccessibleDesign, and more. It's all of these things, in philosophical form. More importantly though, Kind Design is a contract to not engage in #HostileDesign, aka #DarkPatterns.

Republicans pulled off the hat trick. In one interaction, they combined confirmshaming, roach motelling, and sneaking-into-basket. This is AGGRESSIVE weaponization of #DarkPatterns. And it's not new. They've been doing this over the last two years consistently. #HostileDesign

There is SO MUCH that must be balanced when you're considering cookie compliance banner UX to keep from wading into #HostileDesign territory. WE want the user to accept things because the tracking is important to US. THEY just want the damn thing out of the way.

Chatbots aren't even good yet, and companies are already using systems like this as a #HostileDesign pattern to take an obvious, easily answered user journey, and hide the answer. They WANT you to get frustrated and give up so you don't do Task X which costs them revenue.
