Hadza Hunter-Gatherers Share Food Equally — But Mostly When They Have To Self-interest, not spontaneous generosity, drives equality among the Hadza of Tanzania

New research with the Hadza challenges the “noble generosity” model of forager egalitarianism. Equality emerged in experiments only when people could take what they felt was owed — not when they were asked to give. #HunterGatherers #HumanEvolution #BehavioralAnthropology

What Was Actually in the Pot New analysis of charred residues on prehistoric pottery is rewriting what we thought we knew about hunter-gatherer cuisine in Northern and Eastern Europe.

Charred residues on 6,000-year-old pottery are revealing prehistoric European “recipes” — guelder rose berries with fish, greens with cyprinids, tubers alongside dairy. Forager cuisine was more intentional than we thought. #Archaeology #Prehistory #HunterGatherers

#Huntergatherers work many hours less to procure their food than agriculturalists do to produce theirs. Most evidence shows that hunter-gatherers resisted #agricultural subsistence methods, and were either #colonized & enslaved by agricultural societies or died of the diseases that festered in them.

Who Gets Buried Together on a Stone Age Island Ancient DNA from a 5,500-year-old cemetery on Gotland reveals that hunter-gatherers tracked kinship well beyond the nuclear family.

Ancient DNA from a 5,500-year-old hunter-gatherer cemetery on Gotland shows people buried together were kin, but often second- or third-degree relatives, not parents and children. The Stone Age family was wider than we assumed. #AncientDNA #Archaeogenetics #HunterGatherers

An international team of researchers has unraveled decisive chemical evidence that redefines the chronology and sophistication of the **earliest hunting technologies**. On quartz arrowheads, dating back 60,000 years, from the Umhlatuzana rock shelter in KwaZulu-Natal (South Africa), residues of a toxic plant compound derived from _Boophone disticha_ —commonly known as gifbol or poison bulb—have been identified. This discovery, published in the journal _Science Advances_ , constitutes the oldest known direct evidence of the use of **poison on projectiles** , pushing back the material evidence for these complex practices by tens of millennia. The research, the result of sustained collaboration between scientists from South Africa and Sweden, employed advanced techniques for the analysis of organic residues. Chemical examinations revealed the presence of two specific alkaloids, bufanidrine and epibufanisine, organic compounds that are characteristic and stable markers of _Boophone disticha_. Boophone disticha (L.f.) Herb., microlithic arrowhead, and Umhlatuzana Rock Shelter. Credit: A. Motala / G. Bowers-Winters / R. Taylor / M.L / G. Dusseldorp and I. Sifogeorgaki This plant, **still used by traditional hunting communities** in the region for its potent neurotoxic properties, causes paralysis and death in prey, significantly increasing hunting efficiency even when wounds are not immediately fatal. Professor Marlize Lombard, a researcher at the _Palaeo-Research Institute_ of the University of Johannesburg, underscores the significance of the finding. The evidence demonstrates that the human groups inhabiting southern Africa had not only mastered the manufacture and use of the **bow and arrow** at a much earlier period than previously assumed, but also possessed a deep and applied knowledge of natural **pharmacopoeia**. This knowledge entailed the ability to identify, extract, process, and apply lethal substances, integrating that expertise into an effective technological system. * * * Follow us on Google News and be the first to read the latest news on archaeological and scientific discoveries. * * * A crucial aspect of the study, led by Professor Sven Isaksson of the Archaeological Research Laboratory at Stockholm University, lies in the diachronic comparison of residues. The same alkaloids identified on **Pleistocene** **arrowheads** were also found on much more recent historical artifacts, specifically on arrowheads from Swedish collections gathered by travelers during the eighteenth century. This chemical match is not fortuitous; it establishes a tangible link indicating an extraordinarily long-lived cultural continuity and technological tradition, transmitted across hundreds of generations. The chemical stability of these specific alkaloid compounds, confirmed by the study, is what has allowed their preservation in the archaeological record for millennia. Isaksson explains that the precise identification of the molecular structure of the substances was fundamental to determining their botanical origin and confirming their resistance to degradation, an indispensable factor in validating the authenticity of the finding in such ancient contexts. Beyond mere technological identification, the research sheds light on the cognitive capacities of these early _Homo sapiens_. The use of **poison** in hunting is neither a simple nor an improvised act. It requires a mental and logistical operational chain of high complexity: the seasonal selection of the correct plant, knowledge of its most toxic parts, mastery of extraction and preparation techniques, its effective application to weaponry, and finally, an understanding of the temporal interval required for the toxin to take effect during the pursuit of prey. ## Subscribe to our newsletter Receive our news and articles in your email **for free**. Type your email… Sign up Professor Anders Högberg, from the Department of Cultural Sciences at Linnaeus University, emphasizes this point. The use of delayed-action poisons denotes long-term planning, anticipation of consequences, and an abstract understanding of chemical and biological processes that are not immediately observable. These characteristics—planning, patience, foresight, and sophisticated causal understanding—are distinctive traits of modern human cognition. Until now, interpretations of poison hunting in the deepest Prehistory were based on indirect evidence, such as iconographic representations or ethnographic analogies. The chemical residues from **Umhlatuzana Rock Shelter** provide, for the first time, direct and unequivocal material proof. This evidence places the development of these advanced hunting techniques within a chronological context associated with the earliest phases of modern human behavior in Africa, suggesting that technological innovation and the systematic exploitation of botanical resources for lethal purposes were integral components of the adaptive repertoire of these groups. The Umhlatuzana site, a key location for understanding the cultural sequence of the Stone Age in southern Africa, thus offers a new fundamental piece in the puzzle of human technological evolution. The finding transcends archaeological anecdote to present us with a concrete scene of profound significance: sixty thousand years ago, in the lands that are now South Africa, a hunter prepared his weapons with transmitted and refined knowledge, carefully smearing the tips of his **quartz arrows** with a lethal extract obtained from a poisonous bulb, in an act that fused manual skill with chemical intelligence—and from which, millennia later, we have recovered its imperishable molecular trace. * * * #### SOURCES Stockholm University **Sven Isaksson et al.** , _Direct evidence for poison use on microlithic arrowheads in Southern Africa at 60,000 years ago_.
