Trimezia martinicensis, one of the walking Irises. This is the yellow one. They make really nice potted plants.

#Freesia is a #genus of #herbaceous #perennial #floweringPlants in the family #Iridaceae, first described as a genus in 1866 by #ChristianFriedrichEcklon (1886) and named after the German botanist and medical practitioner, Friedrich Freese (1795–1876).
Anyone else in a chronically foul mood? The government shutdown and misinformation around it (which popped up in my plant research) is infuriating. I'm going to sooth myself with more pictures of plants since it feels like there isn't much else I can do.

Trimezia coerulea from South America is pollinated by oil-collecting #bees. The flowers have oil-secreting trichomes (hairs) – you can see them glistening with oil if you zoom in on the circled area. #oil #bees #pollination #Iridaceae #TropicalBotany #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

Si hay un tipo de flor que define a la familia #iridaceae son los lirios, bajo este nombre común se denominan muchas especies de géneros y familias distintas pero que poseen flores espectaculares.

Libertia grandiflora - now I know what it's actually called and that it has white flowers! Very nice.
If it was in the sun I imagine it would have a lot more 🌱🤍
Hope you like it for flowers on Friday.
#iridaceae
Seen in passing, taken with my iPhone. White irises, not sure what kind. They have short stems that blend well with low flowers and you could potentially plant taller irises behind them for color.
I'm not sure what the violet-blue flower is.

Photo of two green (unripe) capsules of Iris. One is cut in cross-section. The capsule is divided into three locules by septa. The unripe seeds are attached to placentae in the axils of the three septa.
Axile placentation is very common in the plant kingdom (maybe the most common among multicarpellate families?). The placentae & ovules (→seeds) are in the axils of each carpel, as seen here in the immature tricarpellate fruits of Iris tectorum. #Iridaceae #placentation #Botany #PlantScience 🌾🧪
Close-up photo of a single, purple Crocus flower with three long style branches that are bright orange.
Not exactly an #OddMonocot (it’s in the iris family, #Iridaceae), but the parts we use from Crocus sativus (#Saffron) are a bit odd, viz. the styles. I can’t think of any other plant in which only those specific parts are used by humans, can you? Happy #Plantsgiving! #Botany #PlantScience 🌾🧪
