A view looking along a calm river, past a wooden bridge, and toward a Japanese-style castle standing on steep, angular stone foundations. On our right, a cherry tree overlooks the water, its branches packed with pink blossoms; above, the sky is clear and bright.

A view looking through a break in tall cryptomeria trees, over the line of a low little fence, toward the five-story pagoda at Nikko Toshogu shrine. Details of the pagoda and the trees crowding around its base are obscured by a heavy orange-tinted haze.

A beautiful and vibrant scene of a castle along a river, a bridge and a flowering cherry tree framing the castle in the distance in an interesting composition from the bank of the river.

Yuhan’s unique printing style without black key block outlines simulates the soft watercolor look that creates such a captivating scene.

Kiyomizu-dera was founded in the early Heian period and by 778 it was owned by the Buddhist Kita-Hosso sect under Enchin Shonin, a priest from Nara who received a vision to construct the temple next to the Otowa spring. Not a single nail was used to construct it. It takes its name from a waterfall in the nearby hills.

Yuhan’s art was heavily influenced by the works of Western Impressionists, particularly Claude Monet. He admired Monet’s use of color and light to capture the essence of landscapes and scenes.

#ItoYuhan (1882-1951) is a #Japanese artist from the #Shin-Hanga school who made prints of landscapes in the 1930s. His stamps look like watercolors because they don’t use a key block delimiting color areas by black lines. #PagodaintheSnow
