Another selection of vulture pictures! I think this shows off the diversity in vulture appearance. They all have similar diets (palm nut vulture being the odd one out) but have a variety of plumages and facial features (even tho most of them are pretty bald)

Small collection of up close California condors. Normally you would not be able to get this close to these birds, but the Oregon Zoo is one of the few places that has these birds on exhibit. And sometimes they come down to the viewing windows to say hi and investigate stuff.

IVAD project: iPad shot with reference window and work in progress painting of a King Vulture. Somehow their heads look a bit like that of turkeys. Gnarly creatures but so important for ecology and ultimately our survival. Can you imagine how quickly diseases would wipe us out without these birds?

Profile portraits of an American black vulture, Egyptian vulture, and hooded vulture. All possess very similar profiles with long narrow beaks that hook at the end. Each is from a different evolutionary group of vulture.

Vultures are at least 3 evolutionary lineages that have converged in form based on "how to be a land-based obligate scavenger with a backbone."

Meaning that losing vultures means losing an entire segment of the ecosystem specialized in safely clearing decaying meat from the landscape.
