Many will recognise this gem by JL Carr. I bang on about it enough. It's an absolute classic. Let's follow Steeple Sinderby Wanderers' exploits, round by round, through the @EmiratesFACup. There's a spoiler in the title, by the way. Proper 🧵 this time #jlcarr #steeplesinderby
This is a joy if you have half an hour at hand.

From the archive for J. L. Carr, #BornOnThisDay in 1912, a few thoughts on his sublime novella A MONTH IN THE COUNTRY.
A story imbued with a strong sense of yearning - a nostalgia for an idyllic world lost in the midst of time. #JLCarr #BOTD #BookSky 💙📚

Currently reading: J.L. Carr’s third novel, The Harpole Report. Harpole is an acting Head teacher in a pre-National Curriculum 1970’s Junior School. A really funny, wry look at the politics of a small school and definitely insightful to read as a teacher in a modern day small school.

Penelope Fitzgerald by Hermione Lee
I've just read Penelope Fitzgerald: A Life by Hermione Lee.
She published her first book at the age of 60, so there is hope for all of us.
Sometimes patronised by the male literary establishment, she won the #Booker and was highly rated by #JLCarr and #LPHartley.

We can ask and ask but we can't have again what once seemed ours for ever— the way things looked, that church alone in the fields,a bed on a belfry floor,a remembered voice, the touch of a hand,a loved face. They've gone and you can only wait for the pain to pass.

…he might just as well have gone round the corner and died. But that goes for most of us…I go to work at eight and come home at five-thirty. When I retire they'll give me a clock…my name engraved on the back. Now you know all about me. Go away: I've forgotten you already.
