Being free, Glasgow's art galleries and museums are a great refuge for locals and visitors alike when the weather takes an unexpected turn (which does happen rather a lot!).

A flashback to last weekend's unanticipated snowfall here in Glasgow. It only lasted about half an hour, but it was intense while it lasted. This was the scene outside Kelvingrove Art Gallery as people hurried to take cover inside.

There was some beautiful light on the towers and turrets of the Kelvingrove Art Galley this evening just for a few minutes before the sun dropped below the horizon.

Unfortuantely it seems to have lost its plaque at some point in the last couple of years.

I don't think I'll ever tire of this view of the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in the West End of Glasgow, with the tip of the University tower just sneaking into the mix.

I love this little owl which stands guard on the handrails of one of the staircases in Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in Glasgow. It always reminds me of Bubo from the 1981 film the Clash of the Titans.

However, the pipes you can see in the photo are not a functional part of the organ. Instead, they're decorative pipes designed by John Simpson (one of the architects of the art gallery itself) to help it fit in better with its surroundings.

This means next year (2026) will make the 125 anniversary of its opening as part of that year's Glasgow International Exhibition.

Quiz of the day … who is the artist of this simple work? It certainly surprised me.

Answer: It’s LS Lowry. Very different to his “matchstick men and matchstick cats and dogs”.

Last one for today is the quietly stunning ‘Sunset, Herblay, 1889’ by Paul Signac. I love the reflections in the water and the sunset. It’s such a simple composition, yet I stood looking at it for ages.

I’ve always been ambivalent about Van Gogh. I can admire his skill; the eyes in this portrait of Glasgow art dealer Alex Reid from 1887 are mesmerising. But on the whole, his work passes me by (and yes, I know that’s my loss!).

This little guy caught my eye! ‘An itinerant musician’, probably by Adriaen van Ostade, probably 1640s/1650s. The half-smile is beautifully done. You’d love to spend an hour talking to him, but wouldn’t trust him an inch!

This is one of those paintings; it just made me stop and stare. ‘The Druids - Bringing in the Mistletoe’ by George Henry & Edward Atkinson Hornel. It’s an amazing image, full of colour and strength.

This is ‘VE Day 1945’ by LS Lowry. His work appears so simple, but there is so much going on. It deserves a much longer look at another time.

First thing that caught my eye at the Kelvingrove today was this group of shabtis. I love these little figures, there’s something so personal about them, even though they were produced in their millions.

Another first visit today, this time to the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum. It’s a splendid building, but having some major work done. It still looks good in the sunshine with the University of Glasgow above it. Just a sighting visit today
