from winter woods we gaze into the valley where a city stretches out along the river like a richly woven carpet from Tibet. a distant whistle draws the eye past towers and steeples, stone and lead and verdigris, to where great arches measure out the land in red-brick curves. cast iron scrolls festoon the full gasometer, surround the station’s gaping mouth from which a brightly-painted tram car, hanging from its single rail, darts like a needle stitching towns into one vibrant patterned whole.

Klinker was banned from working by the Nazis and was interned in Dachau concentration camp for 5 month because she had hidden Jewish friends in her apartment. One of her works was displayed at the "Degenerate art" exhibition. "Interior" (c. 1922), is an oil on canvas work by the Belgian-German Expressionist painter Emmy Klinker (1891-1969). The work depicts a stark, angular indoor scene with two figures. On the left, a woman stands with her hands clasped, and on the right, a man sits slouched on a chair. Between them sits an old, dark potbelly stove with a white bowl on top and a wooden crate nearby. The muted, earthy tones and somewhat distorted figures are characteristic of the German Expressionism movement, which aimed to express emotional experience rather than physical reality. Klinker was a notable artist associated with the "Sturm" gallery and the November Group in Berlin, but her work was later targeted by the Nazi regime.
