View from the west down to an asymmetrically shaped lake with deep blue-green water, framed by steep mountains that cannot deny their volcanic origins. They are lushly overgrown with heather, ferns, grasses, trees and shrubs. On the horizon, a slightly higher mountain range with the highest peak of São Miguel, the Pico da Vara (1103 m). The lake is cloudy most of the year, with drifting clouds covering parts of it and changing the color of the water. These drifting clouds are reminiscent of smoke, which is the reason for the name Lake of Fire.
