FOURTEEN SMALL FIRES
— a fortnight of language, held well

Fourteen days of ink and nerve—
from #lacuna to #lambent, #bones to #kiss,
we moved through #ghost, #ache, #shadow, #blood,
felt the #touch of #pale truths, endured #pain, named the #dark, carried #soul, traced every #wound.

I am your #wounded #shadow.
my #aching #bones matching the #pain in my #soul.

I long for your #pale #lambent glow, your #ghostly #touch to lift me from the #darkness.

The #lacuna in my heart gnaws away my senses.
That bittersweet #bloody
#kiss my final poison...

The field seems to stretch on forever, every breath of wind a sigh through the tall grass.
Spirit sheep glow the same color as the moonlight. Their shepherd seems to float, the lambs prancing like dreams, emanating #lambent glow.

They didn't see me
Against the darkness
I pull out the object from my pocket
In the smile of the half moon
A lambent wound
Breathing hard in the cold air
Pale bones shine
A reminder
Of what they tried to erase

I cut myself to see if I'm still here. Watching the #blood trickle down from the #wound as the proof I exist.

The #pain radiates like a #lambent glow but I feel numb, a #ghost with nothing left to haunt.

Lingering on by habit.

The sun is #lambent through the dusty windows. My breaths come quick and quiet, the ground beneath me watered with my #blood. This was a temporary building, like my body, broken open by the #wound. I don't know who to blame. It is getting so dark. I look for the stars.

The tub
Is a sacred place
To reckon

The body marinates
In a soup
Of grime

Debris I carried
Through borrowed sunsets
& sunrises

The ambience
Conjures
Dust in the mind

The #lambent light
Encircles #wounds
Like a cached #ghost

& somehow
I shine on
Like a stone

Your #lambent fingers dance over the old and faded scar on my collarbone.
That mark you left on me when we were still children.
I remember the tears welling up in your eyes when the blood trickled from the #wound.
I smile at the memory and press a gentle kiss on the back of your hand.

I watch as you clutch at your #wounded heart, crying out amongst the #lambent warmth of candles.

Knowing that time will dull the #pain is no consolation.

I fade away like the #ghost I am, tearing my #soul from yours. Leaving you in the #shadow of till death do us part.

Kindled Passion

The lambent light of the fire
Heightens our loving desire
The warmth created therein
Make us passionately begin
Slowly at first the heat builds
As the fire of our passion fills
The air all around this space
Throes of ecstasy on each face

The corridor breathes #lambent light, my steps in time with the pulse as I try every door.

Behind one of them, my memories; everything from before two days ago locked away.

Voices. Soft, like a #wound licked. Doorknob hot. This is it.

I open the door and remember choosing to forget.

Text of lambent poem by Lauren Scharhag

it was the LBJ years and they were camping
at Lake Jeff Davis in Jeff Davis County fishing
at sunset for catfish and nacreous-bodied bream
they were just about to pack up their catches
and gear when a lambent glow broke through
the scrub pines they weren’t the only family
there that day they all saw it an immense craft
darkening from white to flashing golds and reds
saucer-shaped just like all the tabloids said
and they watched it drift out over the center
of the lake churning the water into a suckhole
a Mississippi Charybdis it shot straight up
into the darkening sky and was gone
it’s impossible to say how long it hovered
there over the water how long they stared
at the lights people talk about lost time
as if it’s actually possible to measure such moments
and what is an abduction anyway but angling
for lesser creatures reeling them in on a
silver lure leaving them gasping and
twitching on the banks of an alien world.

The Blackthorn Manor stood abandoned for six years—but tonight, #lambent light moved around an upstairs room—his room. Selene almost crashed her bike when she saw it—and made for the gates. She’d been the last person to see Richard Blackthorn III before he’d disappeared.

Tasting truth on my tongue
For the first time since I was young
This candle is soft yet lambent
With the right fuel, it could turn into a weapon
More powerful than bullets and knives
Truths can make all the wrongs…right.

Limned in light
Though flame's
Now guttered
Watching as it
Spat & sputtered
Heart still fluttered
Down below
Warmed within
The #lambent glow
Formed by kin
Perhaps, may grow
In fallow field
This final yield
And all was left
A seed to sow

The #lambent glow from the eye sockets of the possessed lit her bedroom softly after she'd flung a filmy scarf atop it. Didn't do much about the stench. Maybe she could tell her date a rat had died in the walls. Really, choosing where to meet people was a problem! #vss365

She was leaning against the stonewall, gaze sliding slowly from one lambent light in the night sky to the other. Some of them seemed particularly bright tonight, while others seemed to blink in and out of her awareness, like ideas that were not given enough attention to form into being. Her body felt heavy with the burden of a day spent swimming in the surfaces of others, the weight of her accumulated smiles pulling her down to the earth. Wish I could just sink back into the stone, she thought. She sighed, giving some of that weight to the air around her.
She rolled her head, looking back up at the gibbous moon. So beautiful you are, she smiled, weightlessly, I missed you.
The very moment she blinked, a shadow beside her detached from the rocks, and shaped itself into someone familiar.
“Good evening,” he said, stepping up next to her.
She closed her eyes, inhaling his presence. It’s as if he listened. “Good evening,” she replied, smiling still. She felt him lean next to her, imitating her posture, filling the cracks of her being with his.
“You’ve been thinking about something.”
She opened her eyes, finding him playing with a flat stone between his fingers.
“Hmm,” she made. Always something in those hands to distract me with. “What I’ve been thinking about?”
“Mmhm.”
She laughed, softly, looking back up at the moon. What indeed. “Well, you know… you know how we always talk about the moon…”
“We do?”
“No, I mean, we, us people. We talk about the moon … and the sun… as if it’s their particular energies we seek out in others.” She gestured, feeling a little lost with her words, like she could not properly get them out the way she wanted to. “You know, like, ‘oh you are my sun, warming my days with your smiles’ and ‘oh and you are my moon, beautiful and mysterious, I get lost in your eyes’, that kind of thing.”

He laughed. “Yes, I see. I’m with you.” Not losing a second, he added, “what am I?” He grinned at her, flicking the little pebble up into the air. Caught off-guard, she fixated on it, watching it spin and be caught by his hand. Caught me. He always does. There was a smile in her eyes, but she kept it from bursting into a laugh, caught it with her lips and swallowed it.
“I always thought you were most like the moon,” she said softly. “But I realise now that’s not right.”
He arched up an eyebrow. “It is not?”
“I mean…”, her hands folded and unfolded, “I don’t know, it might be, and I love the moon, oh so, so much—”
Now both his eyebrows arched up. “You love me?”
A searing flash of lightning struck her core. Holy fuck, abort mission. “Fuck, no! No no, not what I meant,” she stammered, blushing furiously.
“Except you just said—”
“No!” She clenched her jaw, staring at him as menacingly as she could muster. Goddamn fiend.
He rolled his eyes chuckling, and shrugged. “Fine. Continue. So, I am not the moon?”
She froze. Wait. I think what I meant to say is so much worse than calling him Moon
She cleared her throat. “Let’s for a moment assume correctly we are not at all talking about you, (stop looking at me like that) but just the way people think about the planets, and each other.”
He nodded slowly, as if to tell her he would indulge, but would not quite let it go
“Today I heard about this relationship between Jupiter and the Earth,” she looked up at the sky again. There he was, nestled between the stars of Gemini. “According to the story, apparently Jupiter has such a strong gravitational field, that it pulls meteors and debris towards it that otherwise would crash into the Earth, pulverising it.”
“Hmm.”
“Like he’s just there, taking all these big hits that would have absolutely destroyed Earth… and he does it just by being there. Just by being himself. Protecting Earth, for billions of years.”
His eyes lifted to hers, as if trying to record every micro expression.

He laughed. “Yes, I see. I’m with you.” Not losing a second, he added, “what am I?” He grinned at her, flicking the little pebble up into the air. “Like, all he does is being himself, taking hits for Earth, this massive, huge planet, it’s just like ‘Live, thrive, love, I will be here, shielding you from the worst. Just be alive. Fear nothing. I got you covered.’ That kind of thing.”
“Right,” he smiled, pushing off the wall, angling himself toward her. “And what did that make you feel?”
“Hah.” Stop doing that, or I’ll end up sinking into you. “I think I almost cried,” she mumbled. “I don’t know. It was so touching. Whether it’s truthful or not, I don’t know, but just the thought of it was… it resonated with something.” She touched her chest then, gnawing at her lip. No surface with you, only weightless depth. His warmth was filtering through her awareness, and she noticed he had move closer.
Slowly, she raised her gaze to meet his.
Heartbeats passed silently, as they stood, unmoving.
A gentle breeze cooled her warm cheeks, played with a strand of her hair, then let it fall back against her skin, softly. She could still feel that resonance inside her ribcage, slowly pulsating waves, pushing outwards like the tide. Gods, you are beautiful.
A sigh. A heartbeat.
An unbroken gaze.
“Can you be my Jupiter?” she whispered.
Touching two fingers to her chin, he smiled. “You know I already am.”
