Opposite Hawksbill (where one is standing) there is the gap of the gorge and then a mountain with a rough rock horizontal stripe. The rocks are a vertical drop off which then resumes a gentler angle down into the gorge, with autumn colors of trees showing prominently. Beyond this mountain are rows of distant light blue mountains blending into a stormy looking overcast sky. The picture is dominated by the rough angled rock, autumn colors and moody sky.

The viewer looks off and edge at Hawksbill across to the shark fin shaped peak of Table Rock and to the right the Linville River gorge. The gorge has a layer of exposed rock before obtaining a steep angle towards the river. Distant mountains are light blue in the far distance and there is light filtering through thick cloud cover. Evergreen trees in the foreground are mixed with deciduous trees in reds and yellows at lower elevations.
