Deep orange flowered lychnis flower named Maltese Cross. There are twenty or more flowers in the genus Lychnis. They are also called Campions or Catchflys. Some are wildflowers but this ‘Orange Dwarf’ is a cultivated hybrid (Lychnis x arkwrightii) whose parents are Lychnis calcedonica and Lychnis x haageana. It is an improved variety of the Maltese Cross (Lychnis chalcedonica) flower, an old cottage garden favorite. The symbol of the Maltese cross was adopted by the Knights of Malta in the 12th century. The four-lobed shape of this icon is now familiar as a firefighter’s symbol. Orange Dwarf gets 18 inches tall, has purplish bronze foliage, and is known as Arkwright’s campion. If you have hummingbirds in the area, they are practically guaranteed to visit this flower, but all pollinators enjoy it. This plant must have good drainage. A sunny position will help it bloom prolifically.

One of my favourites but I have never succeeded with Lychnis Coronaria. I love its common names - Dusty Miller, Bloody William and Rose Campion - and the tiny flowers on spindly stalks with fuzzy leaves. I bought this at the village plant sale. We shall see.
