🌍 Bronze mannikin (Spermestes cucullata) The bronze mannikin, also known as the bronze munia, is a small, compact finch, with a blackish head, grey bill, and brown upperparts. Its white underparts have brown barring on the flanks. A key feature is the darker, iridescent patch on the upper wing feathers. This gregarious bird is widespread across sub-Saharan Africa in grassy areas, open woodlands, and gardens. Bronze mannikins are often seen in flocks, foraging mainly on seeds and occasionally insects. They build ball-shaped nests, sometimes near wasp nests, and both parents care for the young. It has a glossy brown-black head, chest, and chin, with a flash of purple-green iridescence on the face and breast. Its back is greyish brown, contrasting with its white underparts which are barred with black on the flanks and rump. This little bird also has a short black tail and a stubby bill that's black and pale gray.
