#mappymonday: What and Where is Anatolia?
The Anatolian peninsula, also known as Asia Minor, was named when the Roman Empire divided itself into eastern and western parts, naming the eastern part covering the region between the continents of Europe and Asia, Byzantium.

#MappyMonday "La isla de México en el siglo XVI" by Luis Covarrubias. Tenochtitlan (1325-1521) was founded by the Mexica on an island in Lake Texcoco and grew into the capital of the Aztec Empire. The city was connected to the mainland by long stone causeways and crossed by canals.

I will never cease to be grateful that my job allows me the opportunity to work with things as beautiful as this 1785 map of Essex.
Just stop and consider the care and attention to detail here and the pleasure that the cartographer must (surely?) have felt in a job well done...

Most Orcadians are clear about one thing. You can call their homeland 'Orkney' or 'the Orkney Islands' but NEVER 'The Orkneys'.
Quite what they would make of early 18th century cartographer Herman Moll's use of the term 'Orkneyshire' I really wouldn't like to say... 😱
