What Book Could I Read Over and Over Again? #dailyprompt-1902 Well, this is a daily prompt right up my alley . . . or library, rather. #WordPressDailyPrompt-1902 #Books #Poetry #MaryOliver #Reading #DogSongs #RainbowRowell When I was young, I frequently re-read books like Old Yeller and Little Women before discovering the world of Nancy Drew and Trixie Belden (yep, I imagine that there's a whole generation or four that have never heard of Trixie Belden, but I loved those stories even more than Nancy Drew). Some time in my teens, I adopted the mindset: so many books, so little time and have adhered to it ever since.

Today I’m flying low and I’m
not saying a word
I’m letting all the voodoos of ambition sleep.

The world goes on as it must,
the bees in the garden rumbling a little,
the fish leaping, the gnats getting eaten.
And so forth.

But I’m taking the day off.
Quiet as a feather.
I hardly move though really I’m traveling
a terrific distance.

Stillness. One of the doors
into the temple.

Oh do you have time
to linger
for just a little while
out of your busy

and very important day
for the goldfinches
that have gathered
in a field of thistles

for a musical battle,
to see who can sing
the highest note,
or the lowest,

or the most expressive of mirth,
or the most tender?
Their strong, blunt beaks
drink the air

as they strive
melodiously
not for your sake
and not for mine

and not for the sake of winning
but for sheer delight and gratitude –
believe us, they say,
it is a serious thing

just to be alive
on this fresh morning
in the broken world.
I beg of you,

do not walk by
without pausing
to attend to this
rather ridiculous performance.

It could mean something.
It could mean everything.
It could be what Rilke meant, when he wrote:
You must change your life.

A poignant reminder from Mary Oliver from her poem “Loneliness” (2014)

Oh, mother earth,
your comfort is great, your arms never withhold.
It has saved my life to know this.

I Ask Percy How I Should Live My Life

Love, love, love, says Percy.
And hurry as fast as you can
along the shining beach, or the rubble, or the dust.
Then, go to sleep.
Give up your body heat, your beating heart.
Then, trust.

For World Poetry Day

"I want to think again of dangerous and noble things.
I want to be light and frolicsome. I want to be
improbable and beautiful and afraid of nothing as
though I had wings."

my life is
with its poems
and its music
and its glass cities,

it is also this dazzling darkness
coming
down the mountain,
breathing and tasting;

all day I think of her —
her white teeth,
her wordlessness,
her perfect love.

Have you ever seen
anything
in your life
more wonderful

than the way the sun,
every evening,
relaxed and easy,
floats toward the horizon

and into the clouds or the hills,
or the rumpled sea,
and is gone–
and how it slides again

out of the blackness,
every morning,
on the other side of the world,
like a red flower

streaming upward on its heavenly oils,
say, on a morning in early summer,
at its perfect imperial distance–
and have you ever felt for anything
such wild love–
do you think there is anywhere, in any language,
a word billowing enough
for the pleasure

that fills you,
as the sun
reaches out,
as it warms you

as you stand there,
empty-handed–
or have you too
turned from this world–

or have you too
gone crazy
for power,
for things?

Have you ever seen anything in your life more wonderful than the way the sun, every evening, relaxed and easy, floats toward the horizon and into the clouds or the hills, or the rumpled sea, and is gone– and how it slides again out of the blackness, every morning, on the other side of the world, like a red flower streaming upward on its heavenly oils, say, on a morning in early summer, at its perfect imperial distance– and have you ever felt for anything such wild love– do you think there is anywhere, in any language, a word billowing enough for the pleasure that fills you, as the sun reaches out, as it warms you as you stand there, empty-handed– or have you too turned from this world– or have you too gone crazy for power, for things?

Lil baby blue succubus those are called frenimies! Let them go and never mind what they do cause as much as they love to see you fall remember they are watching and it will destroy them to watch you rise with grace and fly above and beyond their plateau.

The emotional clarity that defines the poetry of Mary Oliver is the result of a careful interplay between language, observation, and reflection.
