Photo by Fenichel Architectural Detail at Hôtel d'Albret (Paris) A stone arch (at the very top) is atop an intricate wooden carving atop an elaborate doorway in a palatial 16th century mansion-turned-museum. A large glass circle, like a porthole, offers a view of brick behind. At the bottom center of the image, just below that 'window', is a "mascaron" - architectural adornment popular at the time. Typically a carving of a face, or of a lion, this one is unusual in that it combines both, a bearded oman, peering out from a lion's mouth, or with a lion as a hat.
