A mayapple flower is hard to photograph because it is under the mayapple leaves and involves crouching and odd angles (for you, not the flower). The flower is 2-3 inches wide, with 6 light green sepals, 6 to 9 waxy petals, and twice as many stamens with white filaments and yellow anthers.
Two mayapples with their leaves very green but looking slightly waxy. An eastern swallowtail butterfly is perched on one of the mayapples. The mayapple has 12-18-inch-tall stems which are topped with umbrella-like leaves.
A rather unusual mayapple photos because there are so many of them bunched together, the leaves are large, so fully open that many of them look like an umbrella has been blow flat, and all are very green. We had a lot of rain and the mayapples liked that a lot.
I have over 1200 Iceland photos to sort through and some April photos I never posted, so today it's #mayapples in #BrownCounty #Indiana.
