The #Mayapples (Podophyllum peltatum) are ready for eating. Just be sure they are “very ripe banana” ripe and to remove all the seeds before eating them. I learned the hard way what the word “cathartic” means, after I ate a whole one, seeds and all.

I walked in the #woods and rediscovered where I first encountered #mayapples in all their glory. They kinda look like a person squatting under a tree to poop. #fact: Native Americans used them as a laxative 😉

So when we took possession of our house in May 2020, we made the decision to get rid of a grass lawn and go native. We have #pawpawtrees #milkweed #trllium #mayapples #spottedbeebalm etc in our front and backyards

A mayapple flower is hard to photograph because it is under the mayapple leaves and involves crouching and odd angles (for you, not the flower). The flower is 2-3 inches wide, with 6 light green sepals, 6 to 9 waxy petals, and twice as many stamens with white filaments and yellow anthers.

Two mayapples with their leaves very green but looking slightly waxy. An eastern swallowtail butterfly is perched on one of the mayapples. The mayapple has 12-18-inch-tall stems which are topped with umbrella-like leaves.

A rather unusual mayapple photos because there are so many of them bunched together, the leaves are large, so fully open that many of them look like an umbrella has been blow flat, and all are very green. We had a lot of rain and the mayapples liked that a lot.

I have over 1200 Iceland photos to sort through and some April photos I never posted, so today it's #mayapples in #BrownCounty #Indiana.

A Mayapple fruit. It's still green, so it's not ripe yet.

Mayapples in May (the obvious name is obvious)!

Unfortunately, these have a disease called Mayapple Rust. It isn't fatal, but it does cause small yellow spots. Every part of the plant is toxic to eat except for the fruit, but only when ripe and eaten in small amounts.

Ahhh. Spring in NY is magical! The forest floor is a blanket of these Mayapples. I love how they hide their blossoms under a canopy, and how the light catches them sometimes between the leaves. #Mayapples #NYforest #flowers

The mayapples are in full swing now... fields of them cover the ground beneath the broadleaf forests... #mayapples #NaturePhotography #spring #ecology

The dog and I took a rest in the shade after our walk today. It's warmed up! The crabapple looks gorgeous, but sadly won't bloom long. I can smell their scent from the deck.🌸

A mayapple blossom. If you look under the broad leaves of mayapple plants in early May, you might see a large white flower hidden there. These grow on the forest floor in the eastern US and Canada.

Wild ginger is flowering, #grackles are enjoying the bird bath (drinking from it actually, the little bathwater-drinking freak), #mayapples preparing to unfurl their leaf umbrellas, my winter-sown #seedlings starting to germinate. #OntarioNativePlants #bloomscrolling #nativeplants #gardening

Mayapples! They are ephemerals and grow through rhizomes in shade. Mayapples flower under the two leaf umbrella. They typically start showing in March. The leaf matter helps protect them through the winter.
