My mom, Winona Doris Ratliff Russell 1916-1999, in a black & white vintage photo, seated at a fancy dinner in the Anchorage, Alaska Officer’s Club, in the 1950’s. Finished small plates with morsels of food, salt & pepper shakers & a large white candle are in front of her. She wears an emerald & gold necklace with emerald and diamond earrings, gold wristwatch and a smart, cream silk collared blouse with flowing 3/4 sleeves. She told me the colors and enthused about the blouse as being right up to the minute fashion “just like Elizabeth Taylor in that movie” which she couldn’t remember the name of. Apparently, every woman alive was trying to get this whiz-bang blouse at that point in time. Mom was a secretary in procurement at Leavenworth before her GS upgrade & posting in Alaska. Her connections in the Kansas City garment district bundled an early spec copy in the mail to her double quick. She said she felt like “the belle of the ball” and was the envy of the secretarial pool, as it used to be called. Mom was always the first to say that she wasn’t a looker, but at least was always well turned out. That’s as may be, but she was and is, beautiful to me. 🥰
Mom in a black & white photo showcasing one of her extra-stylish 1940’s era skirt & jacket double breasted suits — this one was of dove-grey linen. A double row of handmade quilted buttons sets off the slim design and double layered, slanted, flat peplum jacket bottom. She saw the suit in a stylish Kansas City boutique and, scandalized at the price (“$45! Can you imagine that?!” she said), went home and made the suit by hand. Her sister, my Aunt Tish, said it looked better than the suit in the store window, and Mom’s innovation of the doubled, slanted flat peplum bottom, made her the envy of all her friends. Mom had a lot of skills and native talents I do not. Her ability to sew anything on one viewing of a sample, was extraordinary. She could also love so hard & loyally, I have never seen her equal Mom sewed all my clothes as a child. When I was 12, let me buy teen fashion, contenting herself with sewing me handbags, headbands & accessories, plus knitting bibs & booties for newborns in the NICU, where she volunteered as a surrogate grandma, to rock babies born addicted to street drugs Rocking and singing to those babies was the only way of calming their shrieks of anguish, as they were weaned off the drugs. She would cry herself to sleep after, she was so tenderhearted Winona Doris Ratliff Russell, grew up in a different era, part of the Greatest Generation, ready to self-sacrifice if necessary, for the good of all, born with neurology that made her exceptionally sweet, slow and gentle. We will never see the like of such naturally good, loving, loyal & trusting people as her again The environment that produced them is gone forever Thank you Mom, for coming through. I am deeply grateful and humbled to have been your daughter, and student. In a life that has included mentoring by Fullbright scholars, influencer level CEOs, and heavily tenured celebrity academics… You, Mom, were the greatest Teacher I have ever known. I love you so much, and always will❤️
Today is my Mom’s birthday. She died in 1999 and would have been 109 today. Loadsa Autobio in pic Alt text, if u wanna know about the best #autistic #mentallydisabled mom ever. 🥰
Mom wasn’t stupid, just slow. Thinking was hard 4 her but she had 💯 common sense & a bigger heart than I have ever seen.
