A pair of Hooded Mergansers are together on the edge of the ice in a small pond. The female has a cinnamon crest; the male has a nice black and white crest. This photo was taken on 2 April in the pond on Hulls Falls Road in the Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York. The pond was still partly iced over. Spring comes late in the Adirondacks, but as soon as the ice clears from ponds, lakes, and rivers, we start to see ducks again.
