A huge vintage 1960s handmade sterling silver and malachite mosaic inlay Mexican modernist Sun God design pendant by artist/silversmith Miguel Melendez of Taxco. The design is a modernist interpretation of ancient Mesoamerican artifacts and architectural details, and no doubt based on Aztec or Mayan religious iconography. The most prominent Mesoamerican sun gods were the Aztec Huitzilopochtli and Tonatiuh, and the Maya god Kinich Ahau. Huitzilopochtli was the Aztec god of war and the sun, who guided the Mexica people and was believed to need human hearts for nourishment. Tonatiuh was also an Aztec sun god, whose importance was partly replaced by Huitzilopochtli. The Maya sun god, Kinich Ahau (or God G), was depicted in the codices and in the Classic period as having an aquiline nose, large square eyes, and a filed incisor. Melendez started his career working for Spratling in the 1930s and then worked for the Castillo brothers at Los Castillo when they opened their shop in 1939. He later worked for Margot at her Margot de Taxco workshop, and later opened his own workshop in the late 1950s. This is one of Melendez's most iconic designs, and the largest size that he made of it, and it really makes a statement when worn! Probably my personal favorite of his designs, and one of my top ten from all of Mexico from the mid-century period! Measures 3-3/4" by 3-3/8" wide, and weighs a super hefty 68.6 grams total. The pendant is marked as shown with Melendez's maker mark, "Taxco", Eagle 3, and "Sterling Hecho en Mexico". There is some irregularity to the stone inlay which is original handwork as well as the irregular character of the natural stone, and not damage. Excellent vintage condition.

An iconic vintage 1950s hand wrought forged brass and glass tile mosaic Mexican modernist abstract Biomorphic design tray by Salvador Teran of Mexico City. One of his few purely abstract designs, entirely handmade, and emblematic of the Mexican mid-century! Measures 12.75" long by 5.75" widest point and rises 1.5" high at the ends. Marked at back as shown, " 1 Handwrought Salvador Hecho en Mexico 425". Overall great shape with no damage to the metal or the tile inlay, but with considerable oxidation to the metal and detritus acquired over the years, and thus could use a good cleaning or leave it all original if you prefer. Excellent vintage condition.
