With its glossy, golden-orange caps, the velvet shank is quite commonly seen growing in clusters on stumps of decaying hard wood. It is also known as the 'Winter Mushroom' as it is one of the few mushrooms that can be seen throughout the winter months, right into early spring. The Latin name, Flammulina, refers to the bright orange, flame-like colour of the cap. (src: the wildlife trust)

An unexpected abundance of mushrooms on a dreary fall day! Zeller’s stole the show - they were everywhere. My favs included the Ginger Tail, Coral, and tiny little Candlesticks, which poof! when you flick them :o)

We usually describe them as fungi, it’s been interesting seeing them introduced as “mushrooms” over here. In the UK we usually call edible #fungi “#mushrooms” and everything else fungus/fungi. #ecology #micology
If you are a fungi lover/Micologist or nature lover , the rainy season in Sumatra is the best time to visit the HEAVEN! I am still amazed by a striking color of Flame Coral Fungus ( Clavulinopsis sp. ).
