Inverurie Castle, 1 of the 1st in Scotland, stood here from 12th C. There’s 4 Pictish Symbol Stones (a unique horse on one) & evidence of Neolithic & Bronze Age activity. Also, a WWII pillbox stands about 2/300 metres away too!

Motte of Urr, near Dalbeattie. A 12th-century motte that was owned at one time by the Balliol family. It seems to have been abandoned in the 14th century

Bottom line:
The Motte and Bailey Doctrine isn’t a debate.

It’s a bait-and-switch.
It makes extreme views harder to challenge by hiding them behind vague, safer versions.

Spot it. Name it. Don’t let it slide.

The term comes from medieval architecture.
The motte is the fortified tower.
The bailey is the exposed courtyard.

In argument:
The motte is a safe, boring claim.
The bailey is a bold, controversial one.

An image of a Motte-and-Bailey, to demonstrate the Motte & Bailey Fallacy.

NPR (speaking from the Motte): "compromise is key...[the immuno-compromised in relationships with healthy people should be] eating indoors sometimes, maybe during less busy times of the day."

People outside the Motte: "...no."

People inside the Bailey (repliers): "Bold to take a stance against communication of feelings within a relationship."
