When I lived in Florida, I grew Pimenta dioica, a small tree from Mexico, Central America & the Caribbean. Its dried, immature fruits are the source of allspice, so I harvested & dried my own. At the rate I use it, it may be a lifetime supply of allspice. 😂 #Myrtaceae #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

Photo of the trees of the previous photo. Each tree has a single, unbranched trunk at the top of wich is a rosette of enormous, paddle-shaped leaves. Photo by Scott Zona CC BY-NC 2.0.
Syzygium acre is endemic to New Caledonia & is noted for its cauliflory, i.e., it produces flowers & fruits on the trunk. These are flower buds not yet open. It is also a schopfbaume (“tufted tree”), a palm-like single-stemmed tree with a terminal crown of large leaves. #Myrtaceae #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

We can’t talk Myrtaceae without mentioning Eucalyptus, which has speciated like mad in Australia. The name Eucalyptus (“true [or beautiful] cap”) describes the sepals & petals fused into a calyptra (cap) that falls away from the stamen flowers. 📷: Eucalyptus woodwardii #Myrtaceae #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

Feijoa sellowiana (formerly Acca s.), of s. Brazil, n. Argentina & Uruguay, has flowers pollinated by passerine birds (Thraupsis, Mimus, Tangara, Turdus, etc.), which consume the sugar-rich petals (we can eat them, too!). Insects can also effect pollination. #pollination #Myrtaceae #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

Melaleuca peucophylla of Western Australia was formerly placed in the genus Calothamnus, but that genus is now sunk into Melaleuca. The stamens are in clusters & form a flower adapted to bird pollination. #pollination #Myrtaceae #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

Myrtaceae flowers are often stamen flowers, i.e. stamens are showy, colorful & attract pollinators. The flowers have a hypanthium in which nectar collects. The hypanthium is the cup structure from whose rim the sepals, petals, and stamens arise. 📷: Xanthostemon chrysanthus #Myrtaceae #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

Many species of Myrtaceae have opposite leaves with a well-developed vein running just inside the margin. Many genera have inferior ovaries and fleshy fruits, like these Syzygium thalassicum, while another large group of genera has ± superior ovaries and capsules. #Myrtaceae #Botany 🌾🧪🌱
Photo of a leaf with transmitted light showing translucent veins and small dots in the lamina.
Myrtaceae leaves usually have pellucid dots, i.e., dots that are visible with transmitted light. These bodies form from several cells that coalesce & are filled with the essential oils that give the leaves their fragrance when crushed. Eucalyptus blaxlandii 📷: Sam CCBYNC4 #Myrtaceae #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

The Myrtaceae are a large, worldwide (mostly S Hemisphere) group of woody plants, many of which are familiar in cultivation: guava, eucalyptus, myrtle, Melaleuca (née Callistemon). Leaves are usually opposite & always aromatic when crushed. 📷: Melaleuca viminalis #Myrtaceae #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

Melaleuca huegelii is from Western Australia. Like many Melaleuca spp., it’s a serotinous species. The fruits are retained in capsules until released by heat/fire. #Myrtaceae #serotiny #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

Time to move on and this time going to explore the various #Myrtaceae I have come across! This is a diverse family, most of the Australian genera (not all) form dry capsular fruit, and have a variety of floral morphologies with many having very conspicuous anthers!
