Gençliğinde fotoğrafçılık yapmadığı zamanlarda Leifer, ayakkabı boyacılığı ve sandviç dağıtımı gibi türlü türlü işler yapıyordu. Sonunda ilk kamerasını alacak kadar para biriktirdi.
