Thanks @henk-janvdveen.bsky.social for the kind words & news about the Dutch #NewYearPlantHunt!
Inspired by excellent research from @bsbibotany.bsky.social and @metoffice.gov.uk, I wrote an article on how climate change is impacting plant flowering times.
The British research is also highly relevant for the NL, as we are seeing more flowering species during the Dutch #NewYearPlantHunt π±βοΈ
Hurrah!
This new book π from the fabulous @sarahwhild.bsky.social will be essential reading for anyone serious about botanical/ biological recording. Among Sarah's many past achievements: years of driving BSBI's botanical training offering & co-founding #NewYearPlantHunt.

Wonderful to see pix of the fabulous Ada Ryan being used in Canada to promote #NewYearPlantHunt & BSBI's collaboration with @metoffice.gov.uk!

It's a classic early flowering species, but not usually this in these parts. Erophila verna, Arnside Promenade.
A total of 69 records this year on the #NewYearPlantHunt but I'd wager not many were this far north.

Your dad's probably spent years perfecting his garden 'offering' ... but house sparrows are a 'good' bird to have and it's the taking part that counts (unless it's #NewYearPlantHunt when I become ever so slightly competitive!).
Taken from a poster a list of plants found by CNHS in North Cambridge in 2018 for BSBI NYPH. 88 plants. Somehow Cerastium fontanum duplicated on poster, 2nd entry should be C. glomeratum (can you see the join?!)
Just found poster of @bsbibotany.bsky.social #NewYearPlantHunt 2018 with @cnhs1857.bsky.social
88 plants found by 9 botanists cf me 2026 42 Β± same route N #Cambridge. Only Senecio I found: inaequidens & vulgaris, no sign of 'S. jacobaea', squalidus or viscosus from 2018. Now becoming less ruderal π
Lapsana communis, Nipplewort. South Cumbria
Whilst the first #spring plants are now on their way, some stragglers from last year still remain.

Climate change is likely why more than 600 species flowered at New Year, rather than the 20 to 30 observed decades ago. Louise Marsh from @bsbibotany.bsky.social speaking to BBC 5 live about #NewYearPlantHunt.

In contrast, the Ballyheigue hunt was extremely soggy, so much so that we retreated early to prevent hypothermia! We still recorded 44, our highest ever for this route. Had we been able to finish the usual route, I estimate we would have gotten 50+ #NewYearPlantHunt @bsbibotany.bsky.social
