Great use of remote sensing to assess extent of algal blooms.

In this case, Australia's Integrated Marine Observing System (IMOS) uses #NOAA20 Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) sensor data to calculate chlorophyll-a concentrations.

The picture is a 30 seconds exposed image showing a lot of parallel streaks of light, some brighter than others. The surroundings have a dull brownish colour. Above centre is a curved earth horizon, brighter at right than at left. The sun has set at right and some twilight is still visible. Over the horizon is a zone of red airglow, giving way to a black sky. The dull brown in the lower part of the image is a sign of airglow too. Some parts of ISS stand out in silhouette at the top of the image. Comparison with nighttime images of weather satellites from around the same time show a large fleet of vessels, fishing with strong lights at night. This fleet operated more to the west earlier in the year.

As it has every winter for decades now, the northern #ArabianSea appeared to be hosting a massive #algalBloom of #NoctilucaScintillans again this year.

#VIIRS on #NOAA20 and #SNPP satellites captured this view on Feb. 20, 2022.

A larger view lives here.
