VIIRS Day/Night Band imagery from @noaa.gov #SuomiNPP, #NOAA20 and #NOAA21 showed the effect of last night's #TotalLunarEclipse2026 -- more on the CIMSS Satellite Blog: cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/satellite-bl...
However, higher spatial resolution VIIRS data from #noaa20, #noaa21 and #suomiNPP indicated that maximum volcanic ash heights were in the 16-18 km range (darker purple).
The image shows Jamaica with city lights. Kingston at right is very bright.
The image shows Jamaica. Kingston is still very bright, but large parts of the island are dark.

Great use of remote sensing to assess extent of algal blooms.
In this case, Australia's Integrated Marine Observing System (IMOS) uses #NOAA20 Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) sensor data to calculate chlorophyll-a concentrations.

The picture is a 30 seconds exposed image showing a lot of parallel streaks of light, some brighter than others. The surroundings have a dull brownish colour. Above centre is a curved earth horizon, brighter at right than at left. The sun has set at right and some twilight is still visible. Over the horizon is a zone of red airglow, giving way to a black sky. The dull brown in the lower part of the image is a sign of airglow too. Some parts of ISS stand out in silhouette at the top of the image. Comparison with nighttime images of weather satellites from around the same time show a large fleet of vessels, fishing with strong lights at night. This fleet operated more to the west earlier in the year.
Strange looking pattern of lights imaged from space station #ISS by astronaut Don Pettit in the evening of 28 March 2025 local time over the eastern Pacific Ocean. A large fleet of fishing vessels. For context #NOAA20 image. Original eol.jsc.nasa.gov/SearchPhotos... @daveatcogs.bsky.social

During the overnight #LunarEclipse, here's an animation that steps through #SuomiNPP+#NOAA21 (white labels) and #NOAA20 (cyan labels) #VIIRS Day/Night Band images -- note the lack of illumination by moonlight in the earlier images (only city lights & aurora): cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/satellite-bl...
#NOAA20 #VIIRS provided a nice view of Sea Surface Temperature patterns over the western Atlantic and the Gulf of Mexico today - more on the CIMSS Satellite Blog: cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/satellite-bl...

A #NOAA20 (mislabeled as NPP) #VIIRS Day/Night Band image provided a detailed view of the #pyrocumulonimbus cloud shortly after its formation. The observation for Melbourne Airport is plotted in cyan.
A comparison of #VIIRS Day/Night Band images from #SuomiNPP and #NOAA20 showed the notable reduction in city light signatures after an overnight power grid collapse affected much of #Cuba.
