#VIIRS Infrared images from #SuomiNPP and #NOAA21 showed widespread ice leads in the Chukchi Sea during 6-8 January. A combination of ocean currents and wind stress influenced the motion and evolution of these ice leads.

The fierce winds of hurricane #Melissa churned up the seafloor south of #Jamaica considerably, as is visible by the blue patches in these images taken by satellite #SuomiNPP. First image 29 October 2025, second one 21 October 2025, before Melissa arrived. @wed-explorer.bsky.social

The image shows Spain and Portugal from earth obit at night, in a blue and yellow composite of a satellite image. All big cities and smaller towns show up as bright patterns of light. Occasional clouds are blueish. At upper left some large blobs of lights are visible. When compared with the next image, which gives the same view, these blobs are absent. These are the large wildfires.

The image shows a straight-down view on Greece at right, Albania and parts of the Balkan towards top and upper right, and parts of Italy at left. At bottom two small parts of the coastline of Libya are visible. Light veils over the blue sea indicate drifting smoke.

The image shows a webcam view of a crowded beach engulfed by (sudden) fog from the sea - a socalled sea smoke or sea fog.

The image shows a satellite view of the western part of the Netherlands (at right) and fields of fog and clouds over the North Sea at left. In the centre of the image a fog field has drifted up to the coast and just inland. A kilometre from the coast it was just sunny weather.

@wed-explorer.bsky.social

Text says Aotearoa (New Zealand) by starlight and airglow. 7 years cloud-free, moon-free data from VIIRS DNB. Equivalent exposure ~1s. Processing by Helga Kuechly.

Image shows a satellite view of Aotearoa at night with no clouds. The cities are shining brightly, and you can clearly make out the albedo differences at the land-water boundary, as well as the bright reflection from glaciers.

Reminder: my #LPS25 talk is tomorrow - literally the last talk of the conference.

But I promise it's going to be entertaining and you'll leave on a high note! Here's a sneak peak...

The image shows a more or less rectangular white patch in the ocean, being the giant iceberg A23a, at left and elongated South Georgia island at right. At bottom and upper left cloudfields are visible. Around the iceberg numerous small white spots indicate small icebergs, probably broken off the giant one.
