Walsingham is probably the oldest pilgrimage site in England. It's a beautiful village. We visited the remains of the Abbey, built on the site of the 11th century Anglo-Saxon shrine, and also the 20th century Anglican shrine, which looks rather Italianate. #norfolkchurches

Visited All Saints Cockley Cley a couple of weeks ago, one of the #norfolkchurches with a round tower though the tower is in a degraded state. A large number of memorials to the Roberts family of Cockley Cley Hall otherwise the church is not very distinguished and only monthly services in summertime

A selection of #NorfolkChurches visited on bike rides last week.
St. John the Evangelist in Oxborough is a real one off, part ecclesiastical ruin, part functional church, part ancient monument, with the recently restored Bedingfeld chapel and its 16th century terracotta screenscand tombs. Next door to Oxburgh Hall NT. #norfolkchurches
I visited Weasenham St. Peterchurch yesterday, it stands in a prominent position by the A1065, but sadly appears to be little used for worship. The curtained South transept contains a small chapel plus kitchen area. There are pieces of medieval stained glass in the north windows. #norfolkchurches
Painted roof beams: 15th century carved wooden angels at the crossbeams
Wooden boss with carved relief of the Adoration of the Shepherds. Virgin and Child on the left, Shepherds and sheep on the right.

St. Peter's Upwell is tucked away in a fenland village but is the most amazing treasure trove. It has a medieval angel roof that can be viewed from close quarters in the balcony. Hundreds of angels in total. #norfolkchurches #angelroofs
All Saints, Hethel, Norfolk
Common Blue & Gatekeeper butterflies on Common Knapweed.
A mass of Common Knapweed.
Meadow Brown on Common Knapweed.
All Saints church, Hethel, Norfolk.
A lovely churchyard: Wild Daffodils in spring, Field Scabious in early July and now a sea of Common Knapweed.
A favourite destination for a short bike ride from Norwich.

A few weeks ago I visited the Roman site Venta Icenorum (big field with some Roman walls) and tucked in a corner is the little church of St. Edmund, Caistor St. Edmund, with tombstones dating back to the 17th century and very faint remains of a medieval wallpainting. Still in use. #norfolkchurches

Lovely Litcham church, visited on a week day, ticks a lot of boxes. Painted screen, box pews, organ loft. The deli nearby is pretty awesome too. #norfolkchurches
Yesterday I visited St John's Mileham, very interesting interior with Victorian box pews, medieval glass and 17th century memorials (I forgot to photograph the west window, but see the photo of St. Agatha, south transept). Lovely welcome from a very helpful gentleman. Recommended #norfolkchurches
The Parish church of Saints Peter and Paul, Swaffham #norfolkchurches is a late medieval building with an angel roof, 192 carved over the nave, also a later carving of the Peddlar of Swaffham. Super church, I've visited and found it reasonably welcoming with a great atmosphere.
Lots happening next week in our Benefice, we’d love to see you any of our churches if you’re in the area … #holyweek #easter #norfolkchurches #norfolkbroads #norfolkcoast #easterholidays
This morning I visited St James Castle Acre. Welcome not great (no one said hello, though I did get a hymn book etc) and congregation small and elderly. But worth attending for the beautiful building, with a medieval pulpit and the restored remnants of a rood screen the highlights. #norfolkchurches
If you’re in the area we’d love to see you over this Advent and Christmas season #Martham #Horsey #WestSomerton #ReppswithBastwick #WintertononSea #NorfolkChurches
Someone just liked this post from earlier in the year (thanks!) and I thought I should maybe repost it.
