A bunch of Japanese flower plants tied together at the top hanging upside down on old rough kitchen wall boards. The drying green stems and leaves have beautiful orange pumpkin shaped seed pods every few inches. The pods are paper-like with deep red berries inside. Some of the pods have aged more than the others and what is left of the pods are the veins of the flower pods, which look like ghostly cages with the bright red berries in them. The Japanese like to offer these at their Summer Obon festival to honor their deceased ancestors. They represent life within death- the red berries inside the ghostly dead outer shell, which is quite beautiful; the veins of the plant remaining look like lace.

So #Obon recently finished for the year, #WitchSky. While I could only ever observe from the outside, lacking that heritage myself, the Japanese ghost festival is still one of my favourites. And with #Halloween on the way soon, it always gets me thinking.

The legend goes that the character '大’ was first created in white cloth under the supervision of the Shōkoku-ji monk Ōsen Keisan (相国寺/横川景三) and Yoshimasa's retainer, Haga Kamon (芳賀掃部), in 1489.
Fire pits were then dug and set ablaze to coincide with Obon's end.

Another local tradition is the throwing of torches (or burning pieces of straw rope) into the air at the end of Obon (お盆).
In this way spirits are literally directed away from earth to the netherworld.
