Up From the Egg

Bird watchers top my honors list.
I aimed to be one, but I missed.

Since I’m both myopic and astigmatic,

My aim turned out to be erratic,

And I, bespectacled and binocular,

Exposed myself to comment jocular.

We don’t need too much birdlore, do we,

To tell a flamingo from a towhee;

Yet I cannot, and never will,

Unless the silly birds stand still.

And there’s no enlightenment in a tour

Of ornithological literature.

Is yon strange creature a common chickadee,

Or a migrant alouette from Picardy?

You can rush to consult your Nature guide

And inspect the gallery inside,

But a bird in the open never looks

Like its picture in the birdie books –
Or if it once did, it has changed its plumage,

And plunges you back into ignorant gloomage.

That is why I sit here growing old by inches,

Watching a clock instead of finches,

But I sometimes visualize in my gin

The Audubon that I audubin.

Middle-age is when you're sitting at home on a Saturday night and the telephone rings and you hope it isn't for you. ~ #OgdenNash #poet #quotes #middeage

Come, children, gather round my knee;
Something is about to be.
Tonight’s December thirty-first,
Something is about to burst.
The clock is crouching, dark and small,
Like a time bomb in the hall.
Hark! It’s midnight, children dear.
Duck! Here comes another year.

I think that I shall never see,
Himalayan Balsam as lovely as a tree.
And now it's only in the fall,
One gets to see the trees at all.

I would live all my life in nonchalance and insouciance, were it not for making living, which is rather a nouciance.

Hey #OgdenNash scholars - seeking poem "Mrs. Low's House" - not in anthologies, poetry collection sites, nor UTexas Ransom Collection; Harvard coll. keeps timing out. Written in house that his father rented from #GirlScouts founder Juliette Gordon Low, per Answers.com, our only lead so far!

Ogden Nash was truly an observant poet. Some of his short poems or bits of them have stuck in my mind for over 30 years. For example, my favourite;

"Celery raw
Develops the jaw,
But celery stewed
Is more quietly chewed"

How 'Puff The Magic Dragon' Came to Be YouTube video by Great Big Story

So interesting!

The actual story about #Puff the #Magic #Dragon #song and no, it's not about smoking #pot. It was written by Lenny Lipton.

He was inspired by this charming #OgdenNash #poem. I love Ogden Nash.

I Didn't Go to Church Today
by Ogden Nash

I didn't go to church today,
I trust the Lord to understand.
The surf was swirling blue and white,
The children swirling on the sand.
He knows, He knows how brief my stay,
How brief this spell of summer weather,
He knows when I am said and done
We'll have plenty of time together.

Winter is the king of showmen,
Turning tree stumps into snow men
And houses into birthday cakes
And spreading sugar over lakes.
Smooth and clean and frosty white,
The world looks good enough to bite.
That's the season to be young,
Catching snowflakes on your tongue!
