Fossilized shark tooth of an Otodus or Carcharocles showing significant wear and some modern barnacles attached.

A fossilized shark tooth of an Otodus megalodon from New Caledonia. Teeth from this locale are dredged from the bottom of the Pacific Ocean and are often extremely worn. This tooth still retains some remnants of its serrations. #FossilFriday

This #fossilfriday we have the rib of an extinct whale. What makes it noteworthy is that it has bite marks on it made by a large shark. On display at the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science, Jackson.

Otodus chubetensis. Broken lateral(?)

Visited again (in sub-freezing weather 🥶) and found this ray dental plate frozen in ice! It’s super worn but likely came from Myliobatis sp.

Visited a creek in NJ this weekend that bears a mix of Eocene-Miocene vertebrate material. What’s awesome is the first #fossil I found was a broken #Otodus chubetensis… I wasn’t even shooting to find anything I was just taking a walk by the stream!

Being part of a chronospecies, the typical way to identify the otodontid sharks on the Otodus megalodon lineage is based on stratigraphy or age. Otodus chubutensis only briefly appears in the fossil record, primarily in Lower Miocene aged deposits.

Is Carcharocles chubutensis Even Real??? YouTube video by Elasmocast

The age old debate amongst fossil collectors on #Otodus / #Carcharocles taxonomy by Elasmocast (On Point Fossils). The issue with "species" as a concept is that fossils, chronospecies, speciation were not things considered during its initial conception.

My 25 years of palaeoart chronology...

In 2010 I painted a Miocene scene staring Otodus megalodon. Unfortunately, I've lost the names of the other illustrated species, but there is a smaller shark species, a small toothed whale, and an early baleen whale.
