MOSAIC WITH CRUSTAE, C. 50 BCE. HADRIAN'S VILLA

The nucleus of Hadrian's immense villa in the valley below the town of Tibur was a Republican villa, possibly belonging to his wife Vibia Sabina. This was incorporated into the main residential and display area of the rebuilt villa, the "Imperial Palace". Though most of the older villa was transformed beyond recognition, some parts, like a cryptoporticus with a mosaic ceiling and a peristyle, were left relatively untouched. This white marble mosaic floor, of which only small sections remain, comes from the peristyle. It's a simpler version of the old mosaic style "a stuoia" ("woven mat") in which pairs of white rectangular tesserae alternated to create a woven pattern. Here the woven pattern has been abandoned in favour of square white tesserae with a scattering of black, but, to liven it up a bit, irregular tiles of coloured marble called "crustae" have been inserted, giving a pleasantly costly impression.

For #MosaicMonday in the heat of summer, we seek in vain for somewhere cool and shady in the ruins of #VillaAdriana at #Tivoli outside #Rome, but in the C1 BCE a #peristyle offered protection from the sun, and it survived its rebuilding by #Hadrian, along with its floor #mosaic. #AncientBluesky 🏺

SMALL PERISTYLE, 62-79 CE. HOUSE OF THE VETTII, POMPEII

This three-sided peristyle opened onto a small garden space closed by a wall out of the photo to the left. The original roof sloped downward toward the garden space. The peristyle, entered from the main garden, gives onto two rooms that are only accessible through this peristyle, a small apartment within the huge domus of the Vettii. This has long been posited as a gynæceum or womens' quarters, private and separate. The fresco decoration has panels of red cinnabar which only have white frames on them and somewhat ghostly birds and gryphons painted on them a secco. These are divided by white panels with yellow-gold candelabra atop a block of black, and all along the bottom of the two visible walls here is a dado or zoccolo in black. Up under the eaves, fictive architecture on a white background teases the eye.

#FrescoFriday brings us back to the magnificent #HouseoftheVettii in #Pompeii, this time to the quiet #peristyle of the so-called women's quarters, the #gynæceum. #AncientBluesky 🏺

Revisiting the House of the Golden Cupids. The peristyle garden is stunning. It held shrines to both Egyptian deities and the Roman Capitoline Triad. Hellenistic sculptures once adorned the space, and golden medallions with Cupids gave the house its name.

Grabbed this when I went to visit my bestie last year. Twas my first time with a Pro model Pixel phone and had been exploring the area with the camera open to experiment with the different lenses.
