Pet Ownership, Depression, Anxiety, Well-Being, and Cognitive Functioning in Older Adults: Cross-Sectional Study Background: Depression, anxiety, and cognitive decline are prevalent concerns among older adults and can negatively affect their well-being. Pet ownership has been proposed as a potential protective factor, but inconsistencies remain in the current literature. Objective: The study aims to compare symptoms of depression, anxiety, and levels of psychological well-being between older pet owners and non-pet owners. Additionally, we compared the cognitive functioning and cognitive reserve between these two groups of older individuals. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 215 community-dwelling older adults aged ≥59 years (M = 69.13, SD = 6.89). Participants completed a sociodemographic questionnaire, the Modified Telephone Interview for Cognitive Status (TICS-M), Cognitive Reserve Index Questionnaire (CRIq), Mental Health Continuum-Short Form (MHC-SF), Geriatric Depression Scale-15 (GDS-15), and Geriatric Anxiety Inventory (GAI). Data were collected via video calls through WhatsApp and analyzed using the JASP software. Group comparisons (pet owners vs. non-owners) were conducted using the Mann-Whitney U test, followed by rank-biserial correlation for effect sizes (α = .05). Results: The sample consisted of 114 (53.0%) elderly pet owners and 101 (46.9%) elderly individuals who did not own pets. Among the pet owners, 77% were female, and 57% were married or in common-law marriages. In the non-pet owners’ group, 71% were female, and 46% were married or in common-law marriages. Pet owners showed lower depression symptoms (GDS-15: M = 2.33 vs. 3.00 non-owners; U = 4714, p = .02; rb = −0.18, 95% CI [–0.326, –0.028]), indicating a small effect. No significant group differences were observed for anxiety (GAI: M = 5.33 vs. 4.92, p = .52), psychological well-being (MHC-SF: M = 68.21 vs. 67.46, p = .43), cognitive performance (TICS-M: M = 24.74 vs. 24.30, p = .60), or cognitive reserve (CRIq: M = 123.82 vs. 123.28, p = .95). Conclusions: Pet owners’ group presents fewer symptoms of depression in comparison to the non-pet owners’ group. Although no differences were observed in anxiety, well-being, cognitive functioning, or cognitive reserve, these findings suggest that pet companionship correlates with better emotional outcomes in later life. Future longitudinal studies are needed to clarify causal pathways and to examine whether the frequency and quality of interactions with pets influence these outcomes.

"The ongoing issue of stray and abandoned animals in Queensland is being worsened by the practice of rehoming animals from rescue centres without mandatory desexing. This results in preventable breeding, increased stray populations, pressure on local councils and rescue organisations, and negative impacts on community safety and animal welfare. Desexing prior to adoption is a proven, humane, and effective measure to reduce overpopulation and improve outcomes for animals and the community."

Social Cohesion, Mental Well-Being, and the Role of Smart Technology and Pet Ownership Among Social Housing Residents: Cross-Sectional Cohort Study Background: Smart technology has been shown to have varied effects on social cohesion and mental wellbeing. There has been very little research on associations between pet ownership and social cohesion and wellbeing. Objective: We sought to explore this in a sample of social housing occupants in Cornwall, UK. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study that collected data on people’s living environment, health and wellbeing. Participants were social housing residents in Cornwall, UK. We used regression analyses to explore associations between people’s ownership of smart technology and pets, and their reported levels of social cohesion and mental wellbeing. Results: There were no statistically significant associations between social cohesion and ownership of either smart technology or pets. Unadjusted regressions for wellbeing showed an association with owning a smartphone. However, after adjusting for age, gender and SES, this effect was no longer significant. Those who owned any smart technology and those who owned a games console had significantly higher levels of wellbeing, after adjusting for age, gender and SES; the effect held after social cohesion was added to the model. Owning two or more dogs was associated with lower levels of wellbeing. Conclusions: Previous research suggests that the beneficial effects of smart technology are context-dependent, and our results support that. There are limited data on pet ownership and social cohesion or wellbeing: our data suggest there is not a strong relationship.

Is Pet Ownership Just for the Rich? Is Pet Ownership Only for the Rich? Rising Vet Costs, Shutdown & Global Conflicts | Karel Cast 25-124 Pets bring joy, comfort, and real health benefits to our lives—but are they becoming luxuries only the wealthy can afford? In this episode of The Karel Cast, we dive into the skyrocketing costs of pet ownership: from veterinary bills to pet insurance that now runs $100–$250 per month. With MARS Inc. (yes, the candy company) owning nearly half of U.S. veterinary clinics, is the system stacked against everyday pet owners? Why isn’t there public support for families struggling to keep their beloved companions healthy? We also cover day two of the U.S. government shutdown, Trump’s collapsing approval ratings, and the frustrating lack of strong leadership from Democrats. Plus, a terror attack at a synagogue in England raises global questions about hate, compassion, and the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza. How do we balance outrage at hate crimes with accountability for state violence and innocent lives lost? Join Karel for a bold, unfiltered conversation on pets, politics, and the price of compassion. 👉 Support the show: patreon.com/reallykarel 👉 Subscribe: youtube.com/reallykarel 🎧 Available on Apple Music, iHeart, Spotify, Spreaker & more. 📺 Clips on TikTok & Instagram. #KarelCast, #PetOwnership, #VetCosts, #PetInsurance, #MARS, #GovernmentShutdown, #TrumpApproval, #USPolitics, #Democrats, #VeterinaryCare, #PetParents, #CostOfLiving, #AnimalLovers, #BreakingNews, #GlobalConflicts, #SynagogueAttack, #GazaCrisis, #PodcastClips, #OutrageCulture, #PoliticalCommentary https://youtube.com/live/an8FBFdFiug
