This photo series documents the construction of a traditional wooden bridge in a rural Estonian landscape during winter. A group of people work together to assemble the timber structure across frozen water, surrounded by trees and snow. Standing on beams and temporary supports, the workers lift wooden posts, hammer joints into place, and stabilize the structure through coordinated effort.
The images focus on moments of cooperation and physical labor. Workers balance carefully on the frame while others guide the vertical beams from below, showing the teamwork required in this type of construction. Close details emphasize the interaction between the builders and the structure they are creating.
In Estonia, communal work traditions such as talgud have historically brought neighbors together to complete large tasks like building houses, barns, and bridges. This project reflects that spirit of collaboration and shared knowledge.
Presented in black and white, the photographs highlight texture, contrast, and the connection between traditional craftsmanship and the natural landscape.

A Lakota grass dancer follows a traditional Lakota dancer across a ridge. The grass dance evolved from when men tucked long grasses into their belts to today's colorful outfits, covered with long flows of brightly colored cloth fringe. The traditional dance is one of the oldest dances of the Northern plains. The outfit typically consists of a coup stick, eagle feathers, furs, porcupine quills, beads and bells and pieces handed down over generations.

Ruth told me about when she was a child. In school, they were punished if they were caught speaking Lakota, their native language. They were taught to be ashamed of who they were. Ruth may have been poor by common standards, but she was very proud of who she was and was among those who caused me to rethink and change the point of view of my photodocumentary.

The full feathered headdress is noteworthy. This style of dog soldier headdress is frequently constructed of owl feathers tipped in white, although eagle, hawk, or osprey feathers tipped in other colors, such as red, are not uncommon.

After being pushed out of the area of Minnesota by white settlement, the Cheyenne settled into present-day Kansas, Nebraska, Colorado, and Wyoming. Around 1830, in resistance to continued westward expansion, a Cheyenne warrior society of Dog Soldiers or Dog Men was formed.

The Cheyenne had lived in villages sustained by farming and hunting buffalo. In the plains, they quickly adapted to a horse culture along with the Arapaho and the Lakota. The nomadic lifestyle increased their dependence on buffalo for food, shelter, and clothing.

Between a cholera outbreak, loss of territory, the wanton slaughter of over 65 million buffalo, and following the 1864 Sand Creek Massacre of the Cheyenne, Dog Soldiers became some of the fiercest warriors among the plains Indians most resistant to settlement on reservations. Although the U.S. Army claimed to have wiped them out in an 1869 battle at Summit Springs, Colorado, there were survivors. These warriors became more secretive in their operations. Dog Soldier societies exist to this day with members proudly serving in the United States military services.

Born and raised in Pittsburg, Cody Coe wholeheartedly grasped his Lakota Sioux and Northern Ute roots. He’s a registered member of the Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate, a Lakota Sioux tribe. Coe dances in powwows around the country as a professional, competitive dancer. "When you dance, it's like a prayer. Every little movement has a different meaning," he says. His is an entirely hand-made Northern Traditional outfit which includes porcupine quill, deer hair, bone and eagle feathers and talons.
